I have completed reading over 200 books on the Civil War Era 1833-1875, this was a quick read that was concisely logical and compelling. Mr. Oakes demonstrates a rare ability to not only present the evidence in chronological order but place every event in context of the state, national, and international perceptions and realities. The Civil War was a must happen event; if not in 1860, then in 1900, or 1960, or even today. The South was not ever willing to concede that slavery was anything but a positive good and that they were entitled by God to exercise the right to own slaves and to SPREAD IT TO THE NEW TERRITORIES AND STATES! Even investing in the hopes and a plan to conquer the Carribean Nations/Territories, Mexico, and all of Central America AND bring slavery there in a more potent form and make the South the Capital of a slave empire. The self-righteous Southern Aristocracy would have sacrificed this Country as a Nation to accomplish this rendering ALL the Founding Fathers had sacrificed for, diminished for all time. This world would not have been a better place had the North gently let the South go in peace...peace was not possible. 620,000+ dead. Imagine the carnage today if this battle had been fought with the types of weapons we now have. The Scorpion's Sting makes perfect sense and slams home the documented and immutable truth that no nation can exist half slave and half free. D.S.N.
