I was walking through Barnes and Noble when I saw the cover. The cover is what drew me in and it was one of the first times I picked up a book and just began reading it there for about an hour. The story line is great and art is even better!

Childrens toys coming to life with a dark twist. Plucker, the spirit doll that young Thomas' father brings him from Africa in 1942 holds a secret. Broms twisted imagining, imbues the love and imaginative play with which children grant their toys can be sucked out and turned to evil purposes, destroying the soul of the child and enlivening creatures into nightmarish monsters. Thomas' old Jack-in-the-box with the aid and herbal hoodoo wisdom of Mabelle, (the ancient old nurse), and a few other lost-under-the-bed-toys band together to prevent tragedy. Jack challenges vile Foulthings spawned by the Plucker and vanquishes its malevolence. Broms descriptive powers are revealed equally in his prose and his illustrations. His paintings so detailed and layered they yield secrets deeper the more closely they are examined. Poring over them is an exercise in fascination tempered by revulsion. Almost every page contains abominations from a dark mind meant to stir nightmares. Despite its bittersweet, triumphant ending this book will edge in and aid in your discomfort. Brom design on this is most assuredly by design as we discover the authors photo, he consumes an eviscerated teddy bear with a giant fork and spoon. This book is written and illustrated for the dark at heart..Read full review

I bought this book because I'm a Brom fan. I wasn't dissapointed. The art work is superb and really lends great visuals to the writing. The book gives a feeling of a dark fairy tale, more so of the brothers Grim dark originals, not the Disney fluff. If you're a Brom fan you couldn't ask for a better work. If you're not a fan, but are in need of a good read or just want to see some dark art, this is your book. While my opinions aren't as objective as they should be in regards to Brom, i still would recommend this to teenage and older readers.
