'... the structural geology text that I have long been waiting for ... this text truly shows the application of structural geology to real life academic and industry problems. It will go straight onto my syllabus as the required text.' Professor Bruce Trudgill, Colorado School of Mines, 'Fossen's book will be very valuable. It covers a lot of the basics in structural geology but unlike many other textbooks, develops these in a number of important issues for applied geology, especially in the oil and gas business. The overall balance of the book is good making it generally suited for supporting undergraduate teaching and, provided it is priced competitively, should sell well to students. Speaking from an Aberdeen perspective, we are highly likely to use this book as we revamp the structural geology curriculum, through undergraduate and graduate teaching in the next few years. If you only buy one structural geology textbook - this is the one to get. It's both theoretical and practical, but never stuffy, with excellent illustrations and thought-provoking examples.' Rob Butler, University of Aberdeen, "Gorgeous. Nothing less. Everyone in need of structural geology--and that's quite a few of us--will certainly find this book very useful. There is a good balance between text and figures, and the figures are very good, be it the photos, maps, graphics or principle sketches. It is simply a pleasure to read this book. Seldom have we seen such a user-friendly textbook." - GEO, "Once in a while, an extraordinarily superior book appears in the midst of other good books on a subject. Without a doubt, this is ht case with this introductory structural geology work by Fossen. Most outstanding, the book provides a balance between soft rock and hard rock, discusses the field's relevance to basic and applied applications, and includes unparalleled illustrations and photos that are critical for instruction and understanding ... It is the most student- and instructor-friendly work this reviewer has seen. Essential." CHOICE, "Evaluate it? ... I've already put a change order into our bookstore to change to it for my Structure class next Fall! It's awesome." Prof. Terry Naumann, University of Alaska, 'If you only buy one structural geology textbook - this is the one to get. It's both theoretical and practical ... with excellent illustrations and thought-provoking examples.' Professor Rob Butler, University of Aberdeen, 'Lavishly illustrated in color, this textbook takes an applied approach to introduce undergraduate students to the basic principles of structural geology … Containing numerous end-of-chapter problems, e-learning modules, and with stunning field photos and illustrations, this book provides the ultimate learning experience for all students of structural geology.' The Eggs EGU Newsletter (the-eggs.org), 'Haakon Fossen has produced the structural geology text that I have long been waiting for. Bang up-to-date, with lavish use of both field and seismic examples, this text truly shows the application of structural geology to real life academic and industry problems. It will go straight onto my syllabus as the 'required text' when available.' Bruce Trudgill, Colorado School of Mines, 'Gorgeous. Nothing less. It should prove to be a valuable resource for students and instructors alike.' EOS, 'Gorgeous. Nothing less. Professor Bruce Trudgill, Colorado School of Mines, "In addition to being a great textbook option for undergraduates, this book will serve as an excellent refresher for professional geologists. Fossen's extensive use of citations throughout the text, in figure captions, and at the end of each chapter provides an excellent window into many of the most important papers in the primary literature of both modern and classical structural geology. Readers will also find Fossen's references to free and commercial structural geology software and other resources helpful. In addition to the modern approach to structural geology and tectonics that the book reflects, it has several other important strengths. First, it deliberately balances painstakingly accurate detail with 'big picture' ideas and broad thinking. Students and instructors who use this book will also benefit from the balance it provides among observational, theoretical, and numerical and analogue modeling perspectives. Second, the book nicely balances the traditional academic approach to structural geology with important industry applications (e.g., chapter 19, Salt Tectonics; chapter 8, Faults; and many additional interpreted seismic sections) that tend to receive only cursory treatment in other structural geology textbooks. A third strength is its clear and rigorous yet accessible physics and math coverage of strain and stress theory (e.g., chapters 2-6 and Appendix A); the strain analysis spreadsheets and other ancillary material such as textbook figures, problem sets, and field photographs available on the textbook Web site (http:// www .cambridge.org/features/fossen/) should also prove to be great learning and problem-solving tools. In summary, this is an excellent, accessible introductory structural geology text that is admirably well illustrated and well written. It should prove to be a valuable resource for students and instructors alike." EOS
