This is a compelling book written by a man who served in the German navy's submarine force during the Second World War. That he was aboard the only U-Boat ever captured during the war adds spice to his account. I bought it at the suggestion of my son, who had taken me to see the U-505 exhibit in Chicago. At first I was skeptical and believed it would be a maudlin tale of woe and self-serving heroics. I could not have been more wrong. Once I opened the book, I sat there and read it from cover to cover in one sitting. I found it well-written, well-edited, and thoroughly enjoyable. Anyone interested in submarines, naval warfare, WWII, 20th century German military, or unique autobiographies of ordinary people would enjoy this book as much as I did.
Amazing stuff. Can’t believe the torture these sailors went through.
