As a child of the '80's,My Little Pony was one of my favorite animated series, and it's been fun revisiting the series with this box set... Animation was never this series' strong suit..Characters often go off-model (the Flutter Ponies are particularly guilty of this..They go from being smaller and thinner than the regular ponies,to sharing their same build, often between shots),the wrong characters appear in the middle of episodes they weren't a part of,or the wrong voice comes out of a character's mouth... Storyline-wise,there are some decent ones, even with the rather obvious morals...My favorites here are "The Glass Princess",about a vain pig sorceress named Porcina, who wants pony hair (which has magical properties) to weave her new cloak,so she can turn the entire world into glass so she can admire herself anywhere and the "Return of Tambelon" arc, about an evil goat named Grogar, who wants to banish all the ponies to another dimension,so he and his realm of Tambelon can take over Ponyville... Character-wise,many of the ponies are actually interchangable (given the extremely large cast, this isn't really surprising),though there are a few stand-outs... Wind Whistler is a stoic and rational pegasus,Fizzy is a ditzy unicorn who can make bubbles with her magic,Surprise is a fun-loving pegasus (and the inspiration for MLP Friendship is Magic's Pinkie Pie),Heart Throb is a romance-minded pegasus,Shady has low self-esteem,and Gusty is an agressive unicorn...To me,most of the characters are likeable, with the exception of the baby ponies and Spike, who come off as more annoying than cute now (the former especially, since they tend to use "baby talk" like leaving out words in a sentance,or using "me" instead of "I")... Voice-acting wise,it's amazing how many well-known VAs are involved in this...Among others, there's Nancy Cartwright (best known as the voice of Bart Simpson),Russi Taylor (another Simpsons VA,but best known as the current voice of Minnie Mouse),Charlie Adler (Tiny Toon Adventures,Cow and Chicken),and Tress Macneille (The Simpsons,Futurama)...Read full review
I cannot begin to express my joy at finally having these episodes on DVD after all these years. If you never watched My Little Pony, it was a little more involved than you might have imagined with actual plots and adventures rather than just fluff. There are a few episodes that are oddly dark for a show about pretty ponies but there is nothing edgier than you would see on any show aimed at young girls. My joy at finally having these on DVD, however, is overshadowed by my frustration that they finally released Rescue from Midnight Castle (or Firefly's Adventure depending on your generation) and Escape from Catrina (the DVD incorrectly spells this Katrina) but edited them. What is the point of releasing them on DVD at all if you are only going to edit them! We now have to wait for them to either re-release these two specials on DVD unedited or hold onto our falling apart VHS copies. Beyond that frustration, the production values on the actual DVD's itself are terrible. The box has weird pictures of G2 ponies rather than a screenshot from the show and the actual DVD cases have their labels put on backwards. The entire set looks like something someone could have made in his or her basement. A few fans with a color printer could have done this up much classier and we would have known to put G1 ponies on it rather than G2. I suppose this is just the nature of the double edged sword that is cartoon shows on DVD. The people making them don't seem to get that people who watched the shows as children want the entire thing and will notice if its edited. Disappointing, but not enough that I didn't fork over my $50 to purchase this set and I will definitely be enjoying these episodes over and over in the recent weeks.Read full review
I was excited to buy this DVD set because I loved MLP as a child and I *still* love it now as a young adult! It's great having all the first season episodes in one set and I was glad that they included the two specials. The one downside of this otherwise great product was the fact that "Rescue at Midnight Castle" and "Escape from Katrina" were cut! I was very annoyed that they cut out the opening song sequence and the Moochik's song about the rainbow of light in "Rescue at Midnight Castle", and although I'm not nearly as familiar with "Escape from Katrina", I could vaguely remember other parts that they didn't show on that one as well. Other than that I'm very happy with this set and I'm hopeful that season 2 will be on it's way soon!
They just don't make cartoons like they used to. I bought this collection for my niece and nephew who are born in what I consider an unfortunate time for cartoons with the likes of Spongebob, Dora the Explorer and Johnny Test. They absolutely love My Little Pony and watch them over and over. These are not the bland adventures that the ponies are having these days (stuff like organizing a party, finding the perfect dress...blech.) The ponies of yesteryear were too busy fighting goblins, dragons, monsters and smooze to be concerned with trivial things like the recent episodes. However, the stories are told in a non frightening way that really captures childrens' attention, and more often than not the enemies end up reformed, or turn out to be misunderstood. My complaint about the series is that these are not the uncut episodes, they are the ones aired on the Disney Channel, and edited for time. Also, many of the episodes have been released on stand alone discs. Other than that, this collection is a perfect introduction to 80's cartoons!Read full review
This is misleading. The episodes are not actually all from the first season, it actually seems to be a compilation of the different episode mini series they did, with a few regular episodes thrown in. All the episodes seem to be from later seasons as well. There is also a weird tendency for a blank black screen to come on for a few seconds on most episodes then it's fine for the rest of the show. In all wish it actually was the first season, but it entertains my two year old so that's a win. Just be aware that this is not a network type release. It seems like an independant company just stuck stuff on a dvd and released it.
