I bought this Panasonic DMR-ES35VS DVD Record/VCR Combo in January 2007. It is easy to use and set up. The thumb wheel on the remote is a bit awkward in that it has outer buttons next to the wheel that can accidentally get pressed. It works well with wide screen TV's 16X9 (HDTV, like mine) without distortion as well as the old standard 4x3. Copying from DVD to VCR and VCR to DVD is very easy. You can pause the destination at any time to easily remove unwanted material. I am pleased with this unit. If you have 2 Panasonic units (like I do) you will need to set the remotes to control the correct machine, otherwise, when you press "ON", "OFF", or other functions both machines react to the remote! The timer works well but the unit does not have VCRPlus.
The unit is in perfect condition. I had a great deal of problems with the instruction manual. So much so that I contacted the customer service department and complained. I have a Master's degree in Education with a heavy concentration in Instructional Design. I told the rep. that if Panasonic expects users to set up and operate the unit to its fullest potential, they NEED TO IMPROVE the MANUAL! It needs to be step by step and frankly I don't care about the length of the manual as long as it's easy to understand and to follow. About the unit - it seems to be slow on basic functions such as opening and closing /ejecting tapes and dvds. I love the schedule function! However, if I make one single error in filling in the info I must cancel the info I've entered and start all over... I very much enjoy the ability to watch a dvd and record a vhs tape at the same time. Great product but due to the poorly written instruction manual I am not using the Recorder to its full capabilities... I recommend hiring Master's level Instructional Designers to write the manual - not 'techies' who built the unit but do not know how to explain it operationally. Check with Florida State University, Indiana Univ., or Syracuse Univ. for the best Instructional Design graduates. Overall I am extremely satisfied with the Panasonic DVD/VCR Recorder combo unit.Read full review
I would give it an excellent rating if the Remote had been better designed and not placed it's editing and navigating keys so close together. In terms of what it's capable of, and the manner in which it functions, this m/c is difficult to fault. I'm comparing it to a GO-VIDEO VR3845 which it has replaced. That was a better m/c in terms of simplicity and # of functions; plus it gave an extra 1/2 hour recording time in LP and EP mode, but the pic'quality is inferior to this Panasonic. Having SP quality in LP mode, will reduce the number of discs burned by half! Plus those VHS to DVD transfer recordings will look better in my limited experience. On the other hand, if you're copying a tape, the VCR/TV button doesn't function, so you can't watch TV while copying tapes. I just do something else! Recommended for SDTV purposes and if you've Comcast Digital TV(no need for the '09 equipment change up) it'll handle the change. ADDENDUM this went U/S after 3 months - it was a refurbished item. Worse, the Super LP setting wasn't: although only obvious on slo-mo.Read full review
After researching many DVD Recorder/VCR combos, the DMR-ES35VS was picked because of the features it had for my recording needs. For years I would record to the PC and then move my videos to DVD. The ES35VS provides a "one shot" recording from VHS, Satellite, and my home camcorder. The ability to have a DVD ready for the kids while they watch a show on TV is a very big time saver that I see. When the kids want to watch the show again right after they watch it, I have a DVD that I can play for them. Although I bought a used one, this one worked perfectly right out of the box. Very easy to setup, record, title and make a DVD. I have converted several one hr VHS tapes to a single DVD reducing the amount of storage space I need. The features provide the flexibility I needed for making DVDs. The price was too good to let go of this combo. Highly recommend this to parents who want to record TV shows straight to DVDs.Read full review
Panasonic DMR-ES35VS DVD Recorder / VCR Combo I purchased this combination player on E bay at a very good price. I specifically searched for this model because I already owned one I purchased from Best Buy over a year prior and have enjoyed and used very frequently. The programming is simple and easy to follow. The quality of recording is excellent. Dependability has been superb and I have experienced no problems with this recorder. The same unit I purchased at the retailer cost me over $370.00. The E bay unit was a display model, Brand new but did not have the cables or a remote and with shipping I won it for less than $60.00 a Great Bargain. And my remote works it just fine so now I can digitally record two programs on different channels at the same time while watching a third program on Television. I am very happy with this DVD recorder and with the bargain I found on E bay.Read full review
