What's not to like about a pair of middle-aged, southern sisters who can trade barbs, wit and humor with love? I can't chose a favorite of Anne George's Southern Sisters novels. They were all so good and I was saddened by Ms. Georges death a few years back. I will miss her as much as "the sisters." Prim and proper Patricia Anne doesn't understand why her sister, the improper, flamboyant, Mary Alice is in a snit over her son Ray's new bride, Sunshine Dabbs. Sure, Sunshine comes from an unconventional family, but so did her son! Mary Alice refers to Sunshine as a Barbie Doll who found herself a hefty wallet. Mary Alice takes Patricia with her to meet Sunshine's family, since Sunshine and Ray were married in Bora Bora. She won the trip on Wheel of Fortune and met and married Ray there. Mary Alice and Patricia end up in front of a trailer in the middle of nowhere facing Meemaw Turkett, Sunshine's grandmother and guardian. Pawpaw lives in his own trailer across the way and there are a total of five trailers so each grown kid can enjoy their privacy within this compound. When Meemaw Turkett takes the sisters over to meet him they find the lovable bearded grump with a butchering knife in his chest. Unfortunately, this discovery also puts Mary Alice back into contact with her nemesis, good ol' boy Sheriff Reuse who is nothing but trouble. It doesn't take long for the whole compound to be filled with an odd assortment of characters, from relatives to friends to neighbors. Among the suspects is Sunshine's jilted boyfriend, and Kerrigan, Sunshine's mostly absent mom who is also a porn star and Meemaw's spooky channeler who wants to give them guidance. Once again they are thrown into a screwball mystery that they will have to solve because the Sheriff hasn't a clue!Read full review
I read to escape, and I prefer cozy mysteries to beat-em'-up ones. These FUNNY Southern sistern mysteries are almost as good an escape as Joan Hess' Maggody Series. The interplay between the sisters is warm, intimate, and honest. The humor is gentle and folksy. The crime does get solved, but the family comes first. Anne George has found a formula that works, and her fans are grateful.
These books were written by an author from Birmingham. Al., and being from Mobile, I can relate with a lot of her enviroment. Anne George has a wonderful sense of humor and I only wish she had more in her collection. Ms. George has passed away, so there will be no more, but she certainly brightened the world with her precious books about these two sisters I would highly recommend them to anyone!
Anne George was a writer who developed her characters to the point where the reader cares about them and what happens to them.
