This book is about Brian Oswald and his best friend Gretchen growing up as "punks". It follows them through high school, going to shows, getting different hairstyles, school projects, drugs, and alchohol. Gretchen and Brian were always hanging out with each other, driving around in Gretchen's beat up car, listening to an old mix tape jammed in the cassete player. One day Brian Oswald realizes that he is in love with the girl he's known for years. Gretchen is a headstrong, overweight punk with pink hair who will fight anyone who messes with her. All she wants is Tony Degan, a white power 20 something year old who hits on high school girls at the mall. Brian figures out that the way to her heart is through the mix tapes of his ownto show just how much she loved her through music. As he searches he finds more than just a few song he seems to find himself. He hangs out with all the crowds it seems, seeing which one fits him. He realizes that Gretchen was right along, punk was the way to go it was about yourself, your music, d.i.y, it wsn't just another metal song about drugs and sex it was about your life. But Gretchen shows him that punk too is just another stereotypical clique. Brian realizes that he doesn't need groups he is just Brian Oswald and he's ok with that. I really loved that the book was so descriptive, it was as if you were there riding in the car with Brian and Gretchen. In some parts it would drag on a little but that wouldn't last very long before it picked up again. This book is definitely a must read. It captures the true adolescent ways of growing up and finding yourself. Joe Meno has a true way with words and i'm sure we can expect great things from him in the future.Read full review
