This was an excellent novel. In 1943 after the successful attack on the guns on the Island of Navarone, Mallory and Miller are sent to kill the traitor Nicolai. Originally thought to be a traitor who informed on their group to the Germans, they now know that Nicolai is a Colonel and spy in the German army who infiltrated the Yugoslav partisans and is going by the name of Captain Lescovar. Their mission is sabotaged from the start and their plane shot down and most of the commando crew killed. In Yugoslavia they have to fight fast and loose. Captured by what was supposed to be partisans, they wind up in the hands of Germans. A lie about having half a million dollars in stolen drugs works well enough for them to escape and reach the real Partisans. They expose Lescovar, but they aren't believed. Finally he tips his hand, and they kill him. There is a second and equally important mission to complete. A strategic bridge needs to be destroyed to keep the Germans from crossing a major river. There is no way to do it with just explosives, because the Germans are everywhere. Instead they blow up a large dam that in turn takes out the bridge. Very good story.Read full review
