This book is a pretty good basic reference for a beginner- so far I have not found any mistakes in the stitch instructions. I like that it has stitch diagrams as well as pictures and written instructions- makes it easier to figure out where to put each stitch when you're attempting a complicated pattern. It will get you going on the basics of most of the major types of stitches, and offers a couple variations on each (fans, shells, waves/ripples, etc). I honestly think that I would have preferred that the book leave out all the extraneous info as far as all the big pretty pictures of types of yarn (most of which none of us will ever see at our local craft store!), and also the odd "tunisian crochet" and "Croknit" stuff at the back- if you want to learn a different type of crochet, go buy a book that details exactly how to do it- the explanations in this book of the odd variants on crochet fall short of making me feel confident that if I bought the different hook to do it, that I would actually be able to. I think those pages would have been better spent on more regular crochet patterns. BUT, overall, it is a good basic reference for a beginner and it is a lot nicer and more user-friendly than many of the other crochet books out there because it will lay flat and stay open to the page you are working from! Every pattern in it, I have found elsewhere, for free, on the internet- but it's nice to have the book, and when I want to start a new project it's nice to be able to page through and look at quality images of each stitch. Also- I have only tried the purse project in the back- but it was easy to do. I'd recommend lining it with stiff interfacing and fabric so it's not so floppy. I am looking forward to trying the hat pattern next. The one pattern I tried was easy to follow.Read full review
I have been crocheting almost 50 years. but sometimes I come across a stitch I have not seen or have forgotten how to do. this is a good book in that it has several formats, directions written out or in abbreviation, charts [grid] like filet, or symbols[schematic]. the chart and symbol are good to know because you can get patterns from other countries with out knowing the language. this book is good for all skill levels, there are sections for different styles of crochet, tunisian, beaded, irish, filet, croknit. also patterns for projects, a glossary and index. there is a section on different yarns. ever wonder which would be best for a project and the hook/needle size to go with it? this will help. a section on crochet 'tools'. book is not so large, you can take it with you,[about 7x9]. ring binding so it lays flat while working.Read full review
This is a great book whether you're new to crochet or want to increase you knowladge of possible stitches. It's well layed out with great pictures and examples of techniques. I also like that it has a sprial binding so pages stay open. It could use more instruction on increasing and decreasing stitches.
Great book, beautiful patterns, and easy to follow instructions.

This book is great for illustration of the patterns. I had another crochet book that I thought I liked until I saw a friend that had this one and had to get it. It's much better with details to learn by, I just wish I saw it before getting the other one.
