El crecimiento continuo, en tama y complejidad, de la infraestructura de TI que soporta los sistemas de informacion, ha llamado la atencion, a la necesidad de simplificar la administracion y reducir los costes asociados a su mantenimiento, y mas recientemente, a la necesidad de reducir el impacto ambiental causado, principalmente, por el excesivo consumo de energia. Utility computing es una enfoque en el que los servicios son ofrecidos bajo demanda, de la misma forma que la electricidad y telecomunicaciones. Esta es una tendencia anunciada y buscada desde los principios de la informatica, ya que libera a los usuarios de la complejidad de tener que administrar los recursos computacionales y de los costes de mantener una infraestructura sobredimensionada para atender posibles picos de demanda, limitandose a utilizar los recursos necesarios en cada momento y pagando solo por lo que fue utilizado. La evolucion de las teclogias como grid computing, clusters computacionales, virtualizacion, web services y arquitectura orientada a servicios, asi como el aumento de la capacidad y la reduccion de los costes de las redes de ordenadores y de internet, permitieron llegar a un nueva enfoque, que supera el concepto tradicional de utility computing, la cual es cocida como computacion en nube, o cloud computing.
