I love this book. I have homeschooled for eleven years. I just found this book and the wealth of information in it. Cathy Duffy reveals the various methods and styles of homeschooling in a user friendly simple way. It has wonderful tools to use to help a new and/or a veteran homeschooler see where their style is. This helped me to locate books to assist me and my family on our journey. Time is of the essence for most of us these days and Cathy Duffy allowed me a way to peruse lots of material in a quick and easy way. There are lots of great books about homeschooling out there and when I have the time I enjoy them. I loved the fact that I could read snippets when time allowed and walk away to attend to my day without loosing my place. I have recommended this book to lots of people and plan on recommending it to many others. This truly is a great road map to start your homeschooling journey. I personally can't think of anything I disliked about this book. I will purchase another copy in the future to loan.Read full review
This book is a great resource for anyone homeschooling, but especially for those new to homeschooling. It can be sooo overwhelming when you see all the wonderful choices out there for homeschoolers. This book not only offers reviews for many of the better curriculums out there, it also helps you determine what style of homeschooling you prefer and your children's general learning styles and directs you to curriculum that is ideal for those styles. Can you find what you need without this book? Sure. But, you might find it a lot sooner with this book! Instead of working through trial and error, spending money on curriculums that may not work well for your family, let this book save you time and money by getting you to the right stuff now! One thing that would be so nice is if this book also gave reviews on homeschooling helps, such as tracking and record-keeping tools, homeschooling magazines and websites, and the best online shops to find the lowest prices on different curriculum. There might be a book out there that has all this, but I haven't seen it yet. Or, maybe I'll just write it myself! :o)Read full review
I bought this book because I wore out my renewal privileges at the library checking it out so many times! I needed to know what all was available before deciding upon a curriculum for my homeschooling children. Cathy Duffy helps parents determine their child's unique learning style and helps parents determine their own teaching style. She gives thorough yet simple explanations of each "type" of homeschool style (from Classical to Relaxed), helping parents decide what will work best for their family. She has selected 100 products from all the materials she has reviewed and gives a detailed account of the pros & cons of each. She has been careful to select a variety of styles of curriculum choices and not only what appeals to her personally. She is so detailed in her descriptions of the products, you walk away feeling as if you have held the resource in your hands and tried it out yourself. Additionally, Duffy has a website on which she reviews MOST of the homeschool products not included in 100 Top Picks. All I could ask for is that Duffy put out a new edition of 100 Top Picks to include product revisions as well as new products that were unavailable at the time she published this 1st version.Read full review
Cathy Duffy is a true homeschooling veteran. Her book is a definite must have if you homeschool or are thinking of homeschooling and want incredible information about many different curriculum and books. Cathy Duffy is unbiased in her evaluation of the different curriculums, she simply reports the details and leaves it to you to make your own determinations from that. She also takes into consideration that all of us like different styles and methods so she evaluations many "types" of curriculums. This will help you better determine your style of teaching as well of the learning style of your children. If you have any questions or concerns about homeschooling curriculum or are just curious about the different types available then this is definately the book for you!
Cathy Duffy's book is a great guide. She has reviewed a total of 100 different curriculum options. Her reviews are divided by subject area making it easy to find what you're looking for. The best thing about the book are the sections in the beginning that get you to ponder what type of homeschooler you are. She guides you through the process of determining your educational philosophy and the learning styles of your kids which in turn will help you choose the curriculum that will best fit your family's needs. These beginning chapters are extremely helpful as you read the reviews in the rest of the book.
