Heartfelt, poignant stories by a very wise, experienced physician. Includes the author's compelling & candid (but never maudllin) sharing of some of her own very serious physical challenges. Rooted in deep spiritual values, she offers wonderful inspiration for any adult (or mature teen); she's not preach-y, but offers valuable insights & lessons. These are stand-alone stories that can be enjoyed in small - or large- doses! I highly recommend it...the kind of book that can help us all be a little kinder & gentler to ourselves and each other!

This is the most wonderful book! It is so uplifting! What a wonderful change to hear a doctor, a doctor that deals with cancer, be so positive and interested in a person's spirit. I love the fact that she works with other doctors that are burnt out because they are afraid to feel their patient's pain and honor their spirits. I am thankful she had such a wonderful grandfather who understood the important things in life and took the time to teach his granddaughter. Here is a doctor that understands pain and what it is like to be sick. She is remarkable to have such a busy and productive life with Crone's disease. Here is a doctor that understands and know how to minister to a person's spirit. Thank you Rachael!
Rachel Remen's book, "My Granfather's Blessings" is an excellent resource for anyone in a high stress career, especially those of us in the healthcare field. Each chapter is one complete little story about her childhood with her grandfather, and the wisdom he imparted on her with mundane, seemingly insignificant experiences. Each tale has, at its core, a lesson for the reader. Some of the lessons are quite simple, while others are much more complex. The chapters range from as short as 2 pages to as long as several pages. At times Ms. Remen's writing style is complex, making this book a poor choice for a nightstand read. But overall, the book is informative, insightful, and brings us back to the basics of what it means to be human.
Good follow up to her other book, Kitchen Table Wisdom

I love this book even more than Kitchen Table Wisdom, and that is really saying something. I gave it to my brother, after he was diagnosed with cancer. It brought me so much solace in facing his illness that I had to share it. I would recommend it highly. It is filled with wisdom and compassion, strength and love. It is a must read for anyone who wants to be in touch with their humanity
