I Love The Band. I was less than a year old when 'Music From Big Pink' was released, so I've had to get into their stuff after the fact. And right now, they hold my highest regard of any band. Their music all sounds like they want it not only to tell a story, but to SOUND like that story, with the timbre of the music. This album starts out with a bang, cool sounding guitar & the huge voice of one of their vocalists, Richard Manuel, singing, nee pleading out the words of a very emotional song. There are many great songs on this album, including their most famous song, 'The Weight.' I also really like the song 'Chest Fever' which is carried by Garth Hudson's marvelous Organ, and adds a short goofy section, just so they can come out powerful again. The album ends on a fantastic Bob Dylan number, 'I Shall Be Released', which was a regular for The Band. And incidentally, the 2nd to the last song they ever played together on stage (see The Last Waltz - 1976.)Read full review
The CD was of generally good quality, but there seems to be one circular scratch right on selection 11 that keeps one of my CD players from playing that track. But my computer could read it, so I burned it onto another CD. The CD was from a library, so I was surprised that was the only problem. The selections on the CD are of course great if you like The Band, but not everyone does. I do, so I'm happy with it.

One of THE BAND'S finest!! All music here in was written, perfected, rehearsed & recorded in the basement of "Big Pink". This was the pink house in Woodstock were THE BAND lived and recorded for several years. Levon Helm, drummer & Mandolin player refers to this time as some of the "most productive time THE BAND spent together musically". And it shows!! All cuts are chrisp, clean and from the heart! The comradery of living, eating, sleeping, laughing & working under one roof shines through on this recording! It stood on it's own then as it does today, as some of the finest "Original American Music" to ever be layed down.... This one is a "Must Have" for anyone's record collection! Dear People: This is possibly one of the most innovative musical pieces of it's time. Apparently it influenced a wide range of musical talent. Band's such as; The Grateful Dead, Procol Harem, Traffic, and The Rolling Stone's [Exile On Main Street]. Also all the bands who subsequently copied each previous generation. More recently groups like, "Counting Crows" comes to mind. Ironically I consider it melancholy, and nostalgic, like U.S. Civil War Folk Music, played electronically. Besides it was my deceased Brother, "Thomas'" favorite group, and he was a,"Civil War Buff". Thank you for reading, and considering my review. Sincerely: Doc.
This is as clear and clean as I have ever heard this recording and if that is what your looking for I would highly recommend it. MOFI does a great job remastering from original masters and this is no exception! I do think you lose some warmth and depth of sound stage compared to the vinyl but it is still the 1b go to release of this album. Let’s be honest, sometimes you just don’t want to get up and flip records.
