I have spent years studying the history of freemasonry - not biased for or against - as a historian I simple view the facts, and this movie revealed some great truths. Holmes gives a award winning performance and the Lodges' true heart is revealed = murder if nessesary to protect those in the lodge. Though this film is somewhat fictional the historical fact that Freemasonry will murder to help their brotherhood is very relevant (see Captain William Morgan) - a man murdered for exposing the cultic activities in the Lodge! Morgan a Freemason riden by guilt revealed the demonism in the symbols, cerimonies and procedures of the blue lodge. The 1834 Massachusetts Legislature conducted a formal inquiry into Masionic activity and printed a 54 page report stating and I quote (1) Freemasonry is a moral evil (2) Freemasonry is a pecuniary evil and (3) Freemasonry is a political evil, Source= "An Investigation into Free Masonry by a Joint Commmittee of the Legislature of Massachusetts, Printed by order of the House of Representatives, March 1834" (Boston: Dutton and Wentworth, 1834), pg 14. WOW, and again i say WOW!!! Also if you inspect the who's who of todays freemasonry - famous cult leaders will pop up and assasins such as Adolf Hitler, Joseph Smith (founder of Mormons), Taze Russell (founders of Jehovahs' Witnesses) Freemasonry built the 1st 7th day Adventist building, Nathaniel Bedford Forrest (founder of KKK), Jack the Ripper, Mr. Joseph-Ignace Guillotin)founder of the French Revolution head chopping expedition, to name a few. Man who wants to be connected to that? Big draws are Gearge Washington was a freemason - but this is a lie according to George himself saying I went to the lodge one time , and never returned to call another man worshipful master! Way to go George (Letter to Rev. Mr. Snyder from George Washington in Mt. Vernon, 25th Sept. 1798.)Excellent older movie exposing the cult of Freemasonry and how far they are willing to go to keep their secrets! Mind you not a secret society but a societh of secrets! Many people regard Murder by Decree as one of the best Sherlock Holmes movies. I agree. It's an excellent movie. Very well written (which is very hard to find today), produced, and acted. However, I'm not sure whether Christopher Plummer was the best choice for playing Holmes. In the commentary director reveals that his first choice for Holmes was Peter O'toole. O'toole would have been more interesting as the famous eccentric genius. Nevertheless, this is a really excellent movie. Highly recommended.

This engaging and entertaining film asks what if Sherlock Holmes (Christopher Plummer) had investigated the White Chapel murders? Its only natural someone would wonder what happens if Londons greatest detective investigates Londons most notorious crime and criminal Jack the Ripper. Many imaginings from this movie are later used in a more contemporary version From Hell where Jonny Depp plays a holmes like police detective. Following the chain of evidence leading to the same conclusion, a grand elitist conspiracy. Plummer and James Mason(Watson),English actors of world renoun, offer a fresh portrayal of the pare of slueths with some levity and a bit of uncharacteristic emotion from Holmes. They crack the case in typical Holmes style but deliver many surprises. This is a classic film from my youth. It often would appear on a few channels every Halloween. Im so glad i found the copy did.Read full review

One of the best of the "jack the Ripper" movies made with classic performances from Christopher Plummer and James Mason. The film operates on the premise that the murders are tied all the way to british royalty and the film still has significant impact even after 20+ years."From Hell" with Johnny Depp is pretty good too, telling essentially the same story, but this is still the best out there.
Binge watched all the Sherlock Holmes during Covid-19 Home Isolation and MURDER BY DECREE is a classic Sherlock Holmes movie for its day.
