You a Universal Horror fan? Remember Boris Karloff as Imhotep? Well, I've got news for you. There is more than one mummy in this crowd of supernatural beings. This double feature DVD displays the second half of the Kharis series, The Mummy's Ghost and The Mummy's Curse. Unlike their two predecessors, The Mummy's Hand and The Mummy's Tomb, these two are completely ultimate classics worth of divine attention. The best of the four film series, The Mummy's Ghost features the return of the Mummy believed to have been destroyed in the Banning household fire. Aided by an acolyte of the Priests of Arcam, Kharis sets himself on a new task: to find his lost love Princess Ananka who has been cursed to reincarnate until her soul is purged of the misdeeds she had committed with Kharis centuries ago. They find the princess's reincarnated form, Amina Mansori the assistant of college teacher Professor Norman. But the town of Mapleton is onto them, including Amina's boyfriend Tom Hervey. Also, tempted by Amina's beauty, the acolyte plots to take Amina for himself. Neither Kharis or Tom will allow this, leading to a final pursuit through the fields outside of town to the nearby swamps. It is in vain, as it will be too late for Amina. With the fourth installment of the series, The Mummy's Curse suffers through a problem of continuity as the setting changes from Mapleton in new England to the Cajun regions of Louisiana. (What was wrong with their minds, I ask you). However the swamps are being emptied to make way for construction work. Kharis and Ananka are unearthed at separate times. The new High Priest comes to Louisiana in order to achieve his cult's goal of restoring Kharis and Ananka to their rightful burial place. Murders ensue and aatempts to recapture Ananka are made. Events lead to a final showdown at an abandoned monastery hidden in the swamplands. The High Priest is betrayed and killed by his assistant, Ragheb. The assistant lusts for local girl Betty Walsh. Doctor Halsey, the hero of the film, engages in a fist fight with Ragheb. Kharis intervenes, leading to Ragheb's and apparently his own demise. These last two films of the series are bertter than the first set as they do not heavily feature stock footage to improvise the material, and have turned the Kharis character into a little more than just an undead brute following orders. Here is a question based on Curse's ending: did Kharis really die this time? Was a cavein really enough to kill him at last? Who knows? No films were made by Universal after that (except the Abbott and Costello one), and Kharis has been largely forgotten over the years. If you want to find out, just brew some tana leaves? I'm sure he would not deny an invitation for tea...Read full review
My wife and I were looking for a affordable classic Universal Monsters film on DVD. I found "Mummy Double Feature - The Mummy's Ghost/The Mummy's Curse" on eBay and bid because you got two for one, perfect for watching or for use as a background DVD to have on at a Halloween party. Both films star Lon Chaney Jr. as the mummy. By the time "The Mummy's Ghost" was made, Universal had relegated its monsters to B movie status and this one is obviously low rent. The film is saved however, by Chaney's performance and the classic mummy make-up. The film was a hit at the box office, so Universal decided to do a sequel with a larger budget, thus the next film on the disk, "The Mummy's Curse". This film is set in America, a testament to the writer's imagination. It is well photographed and well acted. It even opens with a short musical segment. Both of these films are campy and melodramatic, but they are a lot of fun. A must-have if you are a Universal Horror fan, or just a kid at hear.Read full review
Tired of movies that look like they were filmed in a morgue, try the older movies. No blood spurting, no decapitations or amputations, nothing gruesome, just a lot of chills and fun. You can watch these movies with your grandchildren and have a good time. Yes, they are old but good films.
