This product isn't very good. The idea is sound, and could be argued as being excellent. The execution is abysmal. The internal 2.5" SATA drive bay is unreliable. It requires a (provided) Y cable which converts 4 pin molex to SATA and a small four pin plug, and seems to do nothing more than provide power to a bi-colour LED at the front. Yet the drive doesn't seem to work without it connected. Since the drive is powered by a SATA power connector anyway (the small interposer board accepts it) this is be a baffling design decision. Even with the cable, it is unreliable at best and known good drives stopped responding until they were unplugged and replugged. The power could have been just as easily tapped from the interposer board. The slim optical bay is practically impossible to fit a drive in without removing the casing of the bay adapter. The two holes are quite deep in comparison to the size of the screws used, and because the screw heads are tiny it's almost impossible to keep them on a driver. The bay adapter does not include a SATA to micro SATA converter. Micro SATA's data cable is identical to regular, but uses a much smaller power plug that omits several pins. They included a custom cable to power the LED's for the SATA drive bay, and not a cable to make the primary feature of the adapter actually usable. It could be argued that the maker cannot know whether an IDE or SATA drive would be used, but since this product features USB 3 it seems to be modern enough that an assumption could be made. The opening at the back of the adapter casing is not flush with the rear of a standard notebook optical drive, so if your micro SATA adapter is not straight then it will not fit. This is another terrible design aspect, and the most egregious of them. The USB 3 ports work. Since it's literally just a cable that plugs into a standard USB3 header at one end and that provides two standard USB 3 A sockets at the other with nothing but a grommet where it passes through the adapter's casing to make it unusual, it would have been sad if they'd made a mess of this one. They're easy to get to, and I experience no issues plugging devices in to them.Read full review
