Ok, Squirrels will eat your bird seed no matter what feeder you get. They are clever devils and we just have to accept that. However we can keep them from emptying it in one visit. This feeder is the best at attracting birds while minimizing squirrel feeding that I have owned. My first one of these is at least 8 years old and while I am still using it the plastic clips that hold the top on no longer secure properly and I have to duct tape the top on . The new one now has metal clips which should last even longer. The new one has a clip to release the bottom. My old one may have had that, but I never noticed it...makes cleaning a breeze. My old one had one of the t-perches attachments come loose. A little wire and it was back into service. If they are still selling this in 8 to 10 years when my new one wears out, I will get it again.Read full review

The unit is a good bird feeder. However, it is not squirrel-proof. Our neighborhood squirrels have figured out how to eat freely from the unit. They grab one of the top wires with their little feet and hang their body down until their mouth is in front of the feed hole. They do this while only putting slight pressure on the mechanism that is supposed to close the feeder when a squirrel is on it, so it does not work. I hate to shoot down a product that someone obviously put a lot of effort into getting produced, especially if their livelihood depends on the product, but this product slated to be squirrel-proof when it is not. I suggest a redesign of the top so that squirrels cannot grab onto the wires.

Purchased this Feeder for use in winter 2019. Also use Droll Yankee,Squirrel Buster and Squirrel Be Gone with additional Dome and Baffled Platform Feeders. I am a serious Feeder and go through a 20lb of Sunflower HEARTS (not seeds) and 1-2 pounds of Mealworms in about 5 days. I rarely use Sunflower seeds as its too messy and smaller birds have problems opening the seeds. Meal Worms are essential if you want Blue Birds, Robins and Wrens. Squirrel Buster makes the BEST Squirrel resistant feeders. I purchased this X-1 feeder to give it a try. Initially I was very impressed. HOWEVER, after 1 month the first plastic tab on the cover broke off.. 2 weeks later the second plastic tab broke off and after 2 months.. the plastic holding the steel cable broke off. I used JB Weld to fix it and hope it works and holds up. I will be happy if this feeder lasts just one season. OVERALL: Nice design, CRAPPY CONSTRUCTION..all plastic and expect something to break after a month or two. I am waiting for the spring mechanism to break. Also very hard to clean. CANNOT RECOMMEND UNLESS YOU ARE VERY CAREFUL AND DON'T MIND JURY RIGGING IT AFTER IT BREAKS (and it will). As I said earlier..after 20 years of feeding..dollar for dollar you can't beat Squirrel Buster Feeders. This X-1 Feeder has lot's of room for improvement. DIsclosure: purchased on clearance at Tractor Supply for about 20 bucks. PLEASE CONSIDER SUPPORTING NATIONAL AUDUBON SOCIETY AND WORLD PARROT TRUST.Read full review

interesting, novel design that is specifically designed to thwart squirrels. has spring loaded perch that slides down with excess weight shutting off the access to bird seed when a heavier animal, squirrel, tries to sit on perch.

Squirrels still can steal seeds from the top two feed stations by hanging from the top. I really like the separate feed bins, it allows me to feed more than one kind of seed at a time. Well made.
