This is a great movie. BUT. The average puns included for accompanying adults gets a little too blunt. For example, the boys are trying to be cool in front of the girl. Boy-after hanging up with his father- pretends to still be talking to him when she walks in- basically being very disrespectful and slamming the phone down, turns around and asks the other boy if he has a beer. WHA? There is no parental involvement or support, it's obvious one child's mother is having an affair and they steal cough medicine from the father's drug store, his parents are sucked up in their own problems and don't notice I guess. On the positive, the babysitter goes off on her sleaze boyfriend for putting the moves on her, and the movie has heart. Did my kids notice the adult undertones? Not anymore than I understood at seven that Tom the cat from Tom & Jerry was drunk until I saw the episode again 12 years later, or that Dumbo hadn't simply swallowed some bubbles. My 7 year old GOT the part about the beer and called out disapproval- it was actually a chance for us to discuss this child acting out to be accepted. My 3 yr old obviously didn't notice, but Hollywood's gray area is growing wider and wider......Read full review
I just saw this film today (after missing out on a sold out sneak preview last weekend) and the increased level of expectation was met with one of the most rewarding moviegoing experiences I've had in the last five years. Monster House gives us one doozy of a spooky antagonist, a decrepit domicile of living malice that gobbles errant toys and passerby with equal ingenuity and viciousness. The house is plain old MEAN, and for really small children perhaps a little too scary to take in a gigantic room filled with strangers and darkness. But for those of us who are too grown up for a nighlight this is perfect, creepy entertainment. The same motion capture technology used to create The Polar Express (a film which I have still yet to see) is a very interesting and appropriate choice for this film, where the only truly fantastic element is the demented house that will not suffer trespassers. It works so well because the eerie realism that depicts the characters is so starkly contrasted with the insanity that ultimately drives the Monster House to be, well, so monstrous. Now I fully expected to be entertained by the antics of the house, but I didn't expect there to be much of a story. Again I was pleasantly surprised by what I think is a script that I believe is just as worthy of an Oscar nomination as the script for The Incredibles was. There is, beneath the floorboards of this film, more heart than horror. A tale of love, retribution, acceptance, forgiveness, and ultimately letting go. Monster House is, beyond a doubt, one of the coolest Horror movies for kids ever made. A Halloween tradition in the making that dares to answer that age old question: Can a house be haunted? The answer is a resounding yes with a disquieting post script. Whatever is haunted may also be hungry!Read full review
We actually saw this movie at the drive in. It was a great setting to see a picture like this...made you actually feel like you were across the street from this house just like in the movie. The movie was billed as a comedy. For the most part it is not, it's very dark. That was a disappointment at first but not for long. The special effects are great and the plot really draws you in. The ending is quite the surprise. We enjoyed it. That said, this is not a movie for easily scared children (in which category I would include most children under 6). It's very dark and can be pretty scary for them. My other cautions would be to not let your preteens and younger watch this without a responsible adult. There is a significant amount of swearing and alcohol use for something that is purported to be a childrens/family movie.Read full review
My kids love this movie. They would watch it about 2-3 times a day. They pretty much know it word by word. This is the second one I bought because my toddler decided to break it.
