I've been a fan of Jon Lovett since his Saturday Night Live days. So if you like his comedy stylings you're going to love Mom and Dad Save the World. Lovett plays Todd Spengo, the bumbling yet smarmy ruler of the tiny planet Spengo. Lord Todd suffers from planet envy so he's hell bent on destroying the much larger Earth. But while scoping out his target he spots Marge, an everyday housewife, played by Teri Garr and it's lust at first site. So before he blows up Earth, Todd scoops up Marge and her husband ''Earth Dick,'' played by Jeffrey Jones, and the melodrama begins! Will Marge leave Dick and marry Todd? Or will Dick be too busy leading a revolution on Spengo? And what about Earth? Buy this DVD for the exciting conclusion.
Of course a 10! What’d you think? A six? So quotable, family friendly, and so funny! A role written for Jon Lovitz!

This 1992 comedy romp was touted with the tag line of "Boldly going where no parents have gone before", need I say more. Written by Chris Matheson (ala Bill & Teds Adventures) and Ed Solomon (ala Charlie's Angels and Men in Black), Emperor Spengo (played by John Lovitz) while peering though his amazing telescope, sees the beautiful vision of Marge Nelson (played by Teri Garr). Spengo is smitten with the thought that he must have her, and uses a giant magnet, kidnaps her and her husband Dick (played by Jeffery Jones) hoping to make Marge his before blowing up the Earth. The Emperor with the other inhabitants of his planet are somewhat less than bright (and that is a serious understatement). The also not so bright Dick begins reliving episodes of Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers in order to rescue Marge, save the Earth, and restore the rightful emperor to the throne. Don't take this movie too seriously, because it certainly doesn't and that is exactly the way it should be. "Mom and Dad Save the World" is a Saturday afternoon popcorn film with friends and the kids. Based on the serial Buck Rogers days and filled with moronic gags that actually play very well, this film is a small gem with great heart and guaranteed smiles.Read full review
Silly, stupid, ridiculous, mindless and juvenile all correctly describe Mom and Dad Save the World. From these descriptions you may think that I hate this movie. I love it for all those reasons. The movie is a breath of fresh air in a business that tends to take itself way too seriously. If you’re looking for a hilariously entertaining science fiction comedy to help you escape from your own reality this is it. Not a movie I would have paid to see in the theatre or even buy as a new release but as an eBay purchase it's perfect. A cult classic unrealized. If you like Down Pariscope or One Crazy Summer you'll love it.
Although most people know him as the surly principal in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, this movie is Jeffery Jones' finest work. It's a silly and quirky movie that starts in the US and takes you on a journey to a small out of the way planet named Spengo, after its emperor Todd Spengo. For some reason all of the people on this planet are idiots and Dick Nelson(Jones) and and his wife Marge (Terri Garr) have little trouble deceiving the hapless guards and doing their best to escape Spengo's (played brilliantly by Jon Lovitz) grasp. When the emperor decides that he must marry Marge and make her his queen, Dick must throw off his humdrum lifestyle and become a hero for his wife and the stupid inhabitants of the world, who cannot handle much of anything on their own. One of my favorite parts of the movie is when a group of Spengo's soldiers come upon a light grenade that instantly vaporizes any who pick it up. Dick, like any of us would, asks "Why would anyone pick it up?" and his giant bird-head wearing host shows him that the grenade has a message on the side- "Pick Me Up" which the soldiers do, again and again, until they have to sift through their vaporized comrades uniforms to find it and pick it up themselves. All and all, if you're looking for a fun, funny movie, watch this. For being an older movie (1992) the effects are pretty good and everyone who likes silliness will loves this.Read full review
