I have seen the documentary "The Times of Harvey Milk," so I am familiar with the story. Yet, I was surprised they were going to make a movie about this incredible man. I also surprised they decided to cast Sean Penn as Harvey since I thought someone else should have gottent the part. However, I was blown away by Sean's performance. He was excellent in that role. They way he said Harvey's speeches is very moving. The rest of the cast did an outstanding as well. I was glad they had used the original Harvey's Castro Camera store; it gave the film some authenticity. If you are not familiar with Harvey Milk's story, then you need to watch this film as well as the documentary. Harvey did so much for gay rights for a year before he was wrongly assainated by Dan White. I also recommend that you read "The Mayor of Castro Street" by Randy Shilts, which is an autobiography of Harvey. All and all, I highly recommend this movie to anyone who wants to be enlightened how this courageous man stood up to the status quo and challenged it.Read full review
The Gay Civil Rights movement, as any other before it had it's hero. We celebrate those men and women who fought vehemently for them, and we have dedicate a place in history honoring a special memorial day in their name. Harvey Milk, is one of those giant un heard heroes of this Country, who's story could have not been displayed better by the extraordinary actor, civil rights advocate, humanitarian and simply great human being that Sean Penn. Irregerdless wheteher or not you are pro gay rights or not, or perhaps you do not even care, watching this movie will certainly open your heart and mind simply because we are all americans. This is not a documentary, this is a movie, one that will move you and make you think and realized that there indeed are heroes passing our lives everyday, Harvey Milk and Sean Penn are two of them. While you and me sit comfortably in our living rooms, remote control in hand and the A/C on, Sean is working relentlessly in Haiti from the very beginin, bring hope, shelter, food, medicine and love to these people. Thank you Sean and thank you Harvey, God bless you both! Jose Amezaga Ponce, Puerto RicoRead full review
This is a great film. As you may know Sean Penn won an Oscar for best actor for his portrayal of Harvey Milk, the first out gay mayor of San Francisco. This film is historically significant. The film also features performances by Josh Brolin as Dan White, Milks assassin, and James Franco as Scott Smith Molk's love interest. I recently bought a Blu Ray DVD Player and this is one of the first Blu Ray movies I bought. Thank You, Rick
Not as good as I thought it would be - even with Sean Penn.

It is an important movie for us all, but especially for gay people and minorities to see! We can't forget how only how relatively recently we have finally realized some of the rights & freedoms we likely take for granted. We still have quite a way to go for real equality, but the lessons taught by Harvey Milk's short political life should be realized & remembered...his legacy must live on!
