This book is a monumental work worth it's weight in gold many times over. I had a copy of this years ago but loaned it out. I replaced it and began working through it again. I had forgot how good this little book is. If you study this diligently for a year you will be very prepared to play jazz and you can do it without a teacher.

This is the Bible for all jazz guitar players. It was first published in 1955 and was out of print for a few years. I did have photocopies of the first book back in the '80's and decided to check on Ebay for used copies. Was I in for a surprise! Not only was it available from various sellers but it has been re-issued and I got both volumes for a song! This has lots of useful information on accompaniment and soloing; incredible resource for the serious guitar player.
These Mickey Baker Books are well known to guitarists for many decades yet the material remains just as relevant today as the day it was originally published. A couple of words of warning for some folks: 10 These books are NOT For beginners. You need to have a basic understanding of music and how to read it, which brings me to point 2) There is NO TABLATURE. This in my mind is a good thing. These books are written for guitarists looking to take their playing to an advanced and professional level. Chances are if you are to walk into a professional studio today any charts for guitar would NOT have tablature. Learn the basics of reading music and get some playing experience under your fingers and then come back to these books. From that point on your playing will improve quickly and you will notice a difference you might not have thought existed before. Read full review
