These hats climb on ya bigtime...I found by playing them played them that I began to hear undertones and nuance like I have never heard in any hate I have ever played an I have played some nice stuff.... These hats have that light, forgiving, sloshy feel that are agreeable for traditional jazz. I'm pretty sure they were made in the Diril factory in Turkey. The famous cymbalsmith Diril was heavily involved in the creation of the Byzance line. My understanding is that the early models were made in his cymbal factory before being sent off to Germany for laser engraving of the Byzance logos. Todays Byzance models are still made in Turkey, but Diril has gone on to focus on developing his own brand of very high quality cymbals. The top hat is lathed on both top and bottom. It has a nice mature buttery bloom about it. It has a super responsive stick and a sweet wash that is long and sustained..its chick is great due to its lightness and the "toneyness" of the bottoms which are extensively hammered, but not lathed...what a bottom on this pair!! The bottom hat is extensively hammered, but not lathed. It has that ancient, dark, authentic, comfortable, yet mysterious vibe to it.These hats have that light, forgiving, sloshy feel that are agreeable for traditional jazz. Top hat weighs 835 g and bottom hat weighs 1000 g. Nice!! Here's how Meinl describes these hats: "Exceptional lightweight hihat with a low volume stick response and a soft, smooth chick. Blends well and has a comfortable feel." I love these hats...NFS not for sale!! Guidedawg!Read full review
The Top hat is a light weight hat, completely lathed on top and bottom with a traditional finish. Nice warm woody stick tone and has a low pitch for a 14" cymbal. Also, with a nice subdued bell. The Bottom hat is pretty close in weight, but just slightly heavier. It is completely unlathed on both top and bottom. This gives it a low dark tone that is very controlled. Foot chick has a very pleasing low chick sound. I think being played open, is where this shines the most, because it is warm dark and trashy, with a nice bite, yet is always controllable. Keeping this as another option besides my 14" Sand Hats, for when I prefer more slosh in the hats, with a less aggressive attack.
