Professors Borg and Wright give a good comparison of two views of the historic Jesus. For Professor Borg, there appears to be a dichotomy of sorts involved in being a Christian. First, there is the historical “pre-Easter Jesus,” who was a Spirit person, healer, social prophet, and movement initiator. Then there is the “post-Easter Jesus” who is messiah, Son of God, et cetera. The problem is that the two are, in effect, different people. The gospels tell a story that is "metaphorized" and historically inaccurate. Dr. Wright, on the other hand, comes down on the orthodox side of the argument. He accepts the gospels as historically accurate based on verifiable history as well as his own faith in Christ. He says that we cannot simply discount some biblical material, assuming that the church created it after Christ's death. The key issue for both historians, it seems, is faith.Read full review
