I had these books when my children were growing up. Now, I'm buying them for my grandchildren. Each story "lesson" has a vocabulary/spelling list. The stories are wholesome with character building undertones. But... you know what is the coolest thing about these books? The history of the books! Whenever we go to historical reenactments or museums and the curator type people start talking about the education of pioneer or earlier era children they whip out these books! It's fun to read books that use to be the "norm" for children so many years ago... if they were lucky enough to get to learn to read! The stories are entertaining because they are so different from today, well, except for those "undertones" we still try to instill in our children!Read full review
These are excellent books for all elementary age children. The stories in them are so wholesome and they teach old values that seem to be lost in todays books. Lessons of integrity and honesty, kindness and respect. My kids love the stories and I love the values they teach. They can be used to teach children how to read. I use them for that purpose for my preschooler and 1st grader. And my 4th and 5th graders love to hear the stories. I bought them thinking my kids would hate them because they're so old fashioned but I wanted them to learn the values they teach. It turns out that they absolutely love them. I was very surprised.
I love old school books and this one was great
