Matisyahu is great. However, this album is not. It reeks of something forced out by a record company in the wake of Matisyahu's rising popularity after "Live at Stubbs" was released. A lot of the songs are mediocre, with some exceptions like "Time of Your Song" and "Jerusalem," both of which sound a lot better live and unadulterated by Bill Laswell. This man has a "Matchbox 20" effect on Matisyahu, turning everything unique about him into a cliche puddle of vanilla goo. I think something that was forgotten when this album was put in the mass-production machine is that Matisyahu got popular on his own merits with a LIVE album! The energy of "Live at Stubbs" is completely lost in this mainstream potboiler. The lyrical content however, is still pretty good. While the songs do not follow the story format of "Chop 'em Down" or "Aish Tamid," they are inspirational. In short, this album is a disappointment that requires effort to enjoy. If you like Matisyahu, you will have to look past this mistake and hope for better things to come.Read full review
honestly? i was expecting more. even 'Youth' is a plain vanilla rap/reggae piece with a catchy chorus. other songs on this album make for a little more than good background music when you're busy packaging and printing labels for your eBay customers :)) oddly enough i first heard of Matisyahu on YouTube and decided to buy one of his more known CDs. so i'm not buying this whole corporate piracy dance thing, i'm just buying the music!
After Live at Stubb's - I've been patiently awaiting Matisyahu's Youth CD to drop... and I have been very satisfied (despite my lofty expectations). Youth - the track that is being played throughout MTV - and King Without A Crown - the gem from Live at Stubb's - are the two most air-play heavy tracks... but all of the songs feature Matisyahu's wit, fast lyrics and reggae beats. 5/5 - I really do encourage you to check out Matisyahu - both Youth & Live at Stubb's 1. Fire Of Heaven/Altar Of Earth 2. Youth 3. Time Of Your Song 4. Dispatch the Troops 5. Indestructable 6. What I'm Fighting For 7. Jerusalem 8. WP 9. Shalom/Saalam 10. Late Night In Zion 11. Unique Is My Dove 12. Ancient Lullaby 13. King Without A Crown I am an eBay employee and this review reflects my personal views and is not written on behalf of the eBay companyRead full review
I LOVE Matisyahu; his music and his message! He's an Hasidic rapper/reggae artist, and he's got four CDs out -- I wish there were more! I bought this CD because I would buy ANY Matisyahu CD. He's a fantastic musician. Anyone could enjoy his material, whether they agree with what he's saying or simply want to experience really great rap/reggae music! Matisyahu is the BEST!
Good Luck.
