Burton was killed in a traffic accident. He was replaced by Jason Newsted. Metallica: James Hetfield (vocals, guitar); Kirk Hammett (guitar); Cliff Burton (bass); Lars Ulrich (drums). Recorded at Sweet Silence Studios, Copenhagen, Denmark from September through December, 1985. Metallica's irresistible rise to the top continued with this enigmatic 1986 album. A constant touring unit by this point, their combination of light and dark and their deft staccato delivery, especially on the title track, came brusquely through. Their ever-lengthening arrangements (three songs came in at over eight minutes), bolstered by the precise snap of Hetfield's vocals, testified to their undeniable power. The striding "Battery," the darkly lit "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)," as well as the complex instrumental, "Orion," all gave powerful testament to their ever-developing skill and vision.Read full review
Possibly one of the greatest albums in music history, this will be the benchmark of which all metal albums of the future will be judged. This is as close to perfect as it gets. It has stood the test of time for 30 years and is still king of the metal world!!

Boo-yah! This cd rocks! This was the era when Metallica was still producing breakthrough heavy metal music. The mid-80's were absolutely without a doubt in most metal-heads minds the time period when Metallica was making their best music. The guitar work on this blows you away! The lyrics are profound and makes statements that really were lost after the bands self titled "Black Album" period. If you take the time to listen to all of the bands material from beginning to end then compare the statements made by looking at the lyrics you'll see what I have all along (for the past 25 years that is)...this is simply one of the bands best musically and lyrically written releases by far! My best example is a few lines from the song "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)"...'No more can they keep us in, listen dammit, we will win! They see it right, they see it well but they think this saves us from our hell. Sanitarium leave me be. Sanitarium, just leave me alone.'Read full review
Everything on there is good. The songs are great, the lyrics are amazing, Orion is great, the only bad thing is there is only 8 tracks! Its a definate 5/5, starting with one of their best songs, Battery, and ending with their most influential song to date: Damage, Inc. Battery - 10/10 - Amazing song, from beginning to end. Lyrics are perfect. Master Of Puppets - 10/10. Really good beat and lyrical song. Drugs are bad is the theme, which is a great theme. The Thing That Should Not Be - 9/10 - Great song, great mood, awesome guitar and drum coordination. Welcome Home (Sanitarium) - 9/10 - A great calming song that you could play anytime. Disposable Heroes - 8/10 - Really heavy metal, great if you like war games or third person shooters. Leper Messiah - 9/10 - Perfect tempo and pace, all about religion and how people are sucked into paying money, touches my heart personally. Orion - 9/10 - Greatest metallica instrumental next to Call Of The Ktulu. Damage, Inc. - 11/10 - This song is amazing, the lyrics, the solos, everything. The only thing wrong with this song is that it ends in 5 minutes. If you have to get ANY metallica CD, this is the one to get.Read full review
Package came in outstanding condition, including the CD, case, and lyrics booklet. The album itself is Metallica's best work - it follows the same structure as Ride The Lightning, and refines it. Instrumentally, the album features incredible riffs and great production, and thematically the album has a lot of variety while fitting loosely under the idea of control. One of the best albums ever made, and the original is the best version to have.
