This classic fantasy strategy game combines elements from many other sources, such as MicroProse's own Civilization and Master of Orion computer games and Magic the Gathering collectible card game. City building is based on Civilization's superb model, tactical battles and hero management are based largely on Master of Orion and the elaborate magic system is obviously based on Magic the Gathering. However, the game combines these elements in a unique manner, as the player pursues the ultimate goal of becoming the one and only Master of Magic. The player defines his wizard's strengths and possible weaknesses and builds his strategy around them, planning his moves, researching spells, creating artifacts and hiring (or summoning) heroes to fight his battles. The wizard can win by eliminating his opponents or researching and completing the casting of the ultimate spell: the Spell of Mastery. The plot of Master of Magic (MOM) is to become the dominate wizard on two 'planes' of existence, the normal earth like one and the fantasy based plane "Myrrar". You can do this by destroying your competing wizards (up to 3 computer players) or by casting the Spell of Mastery. The gameplay is carried out in a 2d top down perspective. You move your armies around the board fighting monsters to get treasure, and more importantly 'nodes'. Once you control a node you can summon a spirit to meld with the node and gain mana from it. You also must build up your cities so you can support and train your army. City management is very much like Civilization. You also must allocate your mana for use, or research. You must research to learn new spells. You can do battle with the Enemy's army in a quasi-isometric perspective or you can have the game simulate the battles. The game ends when your home tower is destroyed, you banish all the other wizards (by destroying their home tower) or someone casts the spell of mastery.Read full review
I have played this game , on and off for about 20 years, and remains a Favorite of mine! I Always Customize using Jafar's picture!!! ( U can still rename it ) 4 White books 2 Green books 1 Blue Book 1 Red book Alchemy Node Mastery Artificer or ArchMage Are My Standard Picks Substituting Archmage for Charismatic in the Impossible Difficulty Level to help keep the other Wizards from getting too angry at with me, too easily, early in the game which allows me to keep trading spells longer. i also take the Earth Lore as my choice for my green book spell to start of with, so i can see sections of the world with out sending troops there. HighMen (Paladins Loaded up with Endurance, Flight, Flame Blade , Lion Heart, Invulnerability, Iron Skin , etc Are Simply Awesome!!) Spell Lock , Regeneration, Iron Skin Holy Armor etc are also helpful. Also you can Edit the magical items list, to Find Nicer Items after fighting the Monsters in Lairs or Nodes Settling new towns: drop them close to Deer, and or other resources, such as gold/diamonds/mithril/ etc etc. also, dropping them down, on a river, at an angle to the sea/ocean is best when posible. Trick little know to most. There are two worlds to conquer true... and engineers (Working in groups of 3 to 6 works best)You CAN Build Roads across the Oceans! How? simple. Capture a green tower and from one side of the 2 worlds, Using your finger on the Monitor, and the button to switch from one world to the next, look to see if the land mass on One world will conect two land masses on the other world. if so, put 3 to 6 engs on top of that tower. Tell the engineers to build a road as far out as you can while they are on a tower, in the direction of the other land mass, that is on the other side. next turn, wait to see if the make their move on the Other world. if the do, great your on your way to building a Bridge. if the stay on side they started out on, stop them from going on, and send them back to the tower, and try again. Often times you can connect 2 land masses together on one world between one tower, and the next land mass using this technic. i have on occasion, conected several land masses on both worlds, together doing this. Trading spells with other Wizards is to your advantage! try to trade for good spells (never trade for monster summoning spells), and Give them monster summoning spells in return, when ever possible. if you learn a spell, or trade for a spell, check to see if the other wizards might trade for it, for something else on your wish list to get. Enchanted road, endurance, flame blade, lion heart, Invulnerability, change terrain, gia's blessing, flight, giant strength , iron skin, crusade!!! stream of life, chaos channels, transmute , Healing, Mass Healing... these are great spells, you should try to learn or trade for. enchant item, create artifact, transmute, change terain, and all summoning spells are what you should try to give in return. Never give away spells like, Flame Strike, Mass Healing, Call the Void, TimeStop.. etc etc... You will regret it if you do. avoid summoning massive armies of summoned creatures! they will drain your mana fast! Palidans, Wizards, Preists, are your mainstay armies My Highest Scored game is 9126 and 114% for further tips or game sharing etc email me @ BlindSetter4u@yahoo.comRead full review
Master of Magic by Microprose is absolutely fantastic, much like other games of this genre this one was the first, I spent literally days week's months year's playing this game just to beat the wizards against me. This game is never the same game twice so many options for armies spells types of each, the list goes on and on, much like each game campaign. No spoilers here just all around fantastic turned based strategy game for MSDOS. Be advised this game does require ems expanded memory support, if your pc is newer you may require the usage of Dosbox. Version number on this CD is 1.2. The version I played back as a teen had issues with the game crashing due to contiguous memory allocation errors, this version I've yet to experience this type error. Outstanding game that really should be HD enhanced.Read full review

Loved this game, really glad to have found it again. It is an older game that needs a DOS system to run. I played this yesrs ago so I took an older computer and put DOS back on it so I could play. This copy works great. The game is about building your empire from small villages to large cities. Others try to come take over so yoi need to defend or take over other villages. Precursor to Civilization
A true Pioneer in the Fantasy Roleplaying Civilization verse. Quite a variety of races to pick from as well as types of magic to master and special abilities to further enhance the wizard. On top of which, there are 2 seperate worlds to explore and master! A truly great game.
