A friend recommended this book. It is full of information and an easy read. I found Jillian's personal story at the beginning very interesting. I like the way the book does not have to be read cover to cover. I can take it to work and pick out certain sections and read small segments at a time. Portions of the book has charts and descriptions of hormones and chemicals explaining their cause and effect which can bog you down. I purchased another book, The Detox Strategy. This has the same premise as Jillian's book, but much more intense. Both books are basically about not putting any toxins in your body. Jillian has 22 pages of references at the end of her book and has definately done her homework. Taking Jillian's advice, I am gradually improving my choices at the grocery week by week. (I can't do the throw everything out and start over routine).Read full review
I enjoyed this book and found Jillian Michaels' perspectives interesting to consider. However, she is not a registered dietitian and does not identify her proof of her theories. Is there research to support this? Don't get me wrong...I strongly agree with her promotion of a healthy diet and value her definition of such as eating whole, unprocessed foods. But has it been proven that artificial sweeteners, non-organic meats, and other chemicals in our food specifically alter our hormone receptors and cause us to store more fat? There is scientific evidence indicating that these synthetic foods/chemicals have been linked to cancer and other problems, but I would like to see the research linking them to metabolism. Regardless, she has inspired me to put forth more effort to recheck my food labels and take the time and money to select whole nutritious foods. She is relatable in her story of being an overweight adolescent with weight struggles. I don't mind the way the book is written; however, for the average consumer not in the profession, it is pretty scientific and I could see that it would be hard to follow. Check it out for yourself--no harm in reading it.Read full review
Hi!I bought this book the other day and I cannot put it down.I only wish I would have had this knowledge available to me 12 yrs. ago, this book clearly points out how important hormones are in our body and at the point I am at in this book it all makes sense. I have been into organics for a few years now and live in a smaller town and so a lot is not available, but I like that she gives you the sites to get a lot of products. Plain and simply put, you have to want to make a lifestyle change and stick to it, you are the only one that can do it and with all this information it will happen. This book has already taught me a lot of things that I didn't know, especially doctors that specialize just in the hormone area, I cannot wait to finish reading the rest and really get going on mastering my metabolism and achieving health!!!!Read full review
I was not only wanting to lose weight but truly change my lifestyle- thats why I bought the book. This book is written in a way that anyone can understand it. She does emphasize going organic but how you could read this book and not do it is beyond me. She does a great job of explaining how food effects your hormones and how that effects your weight too. Yes, going organic is more expensive but I would rather spend a little more on food and less on co-pays for dr visits for things I could have prevented. She has a helpful list of items to only buy organic, items to get organic if you have the extra money etc... I didn't do the meal plan she set out because I could not afford it. Instead, I did however change to organic eating about 90-95%. I haven't started exercising much yet but will.So far I have lost 36 lbs in 5 months using the suggestions and information in this book. Jillian also exposes things about what the FDA allows in the things we eat etc. This section actually was the kicker for me to go organic. It is informative and was plain scary to me. I thought I had been making fairly good choices on foods lately but found out what marketing and advertising tricks companies use to confuse the average person. I say buy this book just to be informed if nothing else. Thank you Thank you Thank you Jillian for this book.Read full review
I bought this book 2 weeks ago and just finished it. Its the best book I have read so far. Jillian explains so much about all these chemically altered ingredients that are put in our food and explains exactly how and why they're so bad for us. It has totally changed the way I eat. Actually I'm disgusted when I think about how much JUNK i've put in my body for so many years "poor body"!! We might not be able to change the world but we can certainly start with changing ourselves. I mean why not, we have nothing to lose but so much to gain and were changing the world 1 person at a time. Read it you'll have no regrets I promise!!!!
