This is a story set in the highlands of Papua New Guinea where people are coming to terms with new technology, concepts and words. Two men exchange harsh words and punches after a drinking binge. In all of it, an innocent man's reputation is brought into disrepute. The people from the neighboring village think otherwise and 'make a fire' in the village for the two drunks to 'kill off' and in doing so repair the reputation of the innocent man. The two men don't have the resource to 'kill off the fire' and it is the women of the village who have to then pool together their money to 'kill of the fire' and send off the neighboring villagers. Later the village proceeds with their own dispute settlement issues and a 'het pei' ceremony is done by the wife of one of the drunks who feels bad her husband was the one who brought the reputation of the innocent man into disrepute. One of the drunks who ran riot calling himself a man of calibre was not so such a man, perhaps the innocent man was the real man of calibre.
