Bailey White isn't just an author, she's an original! Her observations of Southern life and tradition from a young girl's point of view are pure genius! She dramatizes so naturally the warmth and humor of her youth. I had some big laughs because her humor is so infectious with her account of rural southern life with her family and a very, very, odd assortment of relatives and friends! It is a real life Lake Woebegon....gone crazy! Bailey's mama is the center character and and she is a very unique(to say the least!) and charming person who will take you to a juke joint that was so raunchy it scared Ernest Hemingway, and then tuck you into a bed that folds up on you as you're sleeping. Aunt Belle who has a thing about alligators, and uncle Jimbuddy who has a knack for losing pieces of himself. My favorite are the hungry ghost who eat when everyone is asleep but their smacking and scraping of knives and forks can be heard by the living, who find food missing in the morning and a trail outside between the bushes streaked with silver. If you enjoy the Fannie Flagg stories, well, read this book and rejoice in the fact that Bailey White grew up in this family to relate one heck of a great story!Read full review
Mama Makes Up Her Mind is one of those books that captures the humor of rural Georgia and North Florida, that combined zone of individualism and eccentricity. Every lover of southern humor will recognize the joys of southern life--the alligators who respond to the prose of Jane Austen, the bathtub on the porch, burgeoning insect life, and the vicissitudes of weather. Bailey White reminds us why Southern story tellers are the best. She evokes real places and people that we all know, and her revelations about the teaching profession ring true. But her stories have the delight of surprise--for example, the substitute teacher who taught physics no matter what class he stepped into-- and his artificial ear, the key to the retention of physics by all his surprised students. The Mama in the story remains an indomitable individual, with her worm farm in the kitchen and her remarkable house. The stories in this volume have a range from the poignant story of the set of historical chairs and the tale of a falling-down historic home with an inhabitant who can no longer care for it to the hilarious, as when Mama straightens out the aesthetic ideas of the abstract artist from Tallahassee. I highly recommend this book. I had read it at the library and laughed so much I bought a copy for myself, and later, a copy for my sister!!Read full review
I first heard about Bailey White on NPR last Christmas Eve, when they played a recording of an essay she wrote about office Christmas parties. She had a sweet voice with a hint of sarcasam and southern twang. It was sort of endearing so I decded to look her up and find some of her books. The title that caught my eye was Mama Makes Up Her Mind. I thought this sounded like a great into to her work, which i knew little to nothing about, and it cost about two dollars, so i went ahead and bought it. I was not dissapointed. The first section of the book sticks with the title of the book by talking mainly about White's adventures in dealing with her mother at various times in her life. Each story is about 2 pages long with an occasional 5 page epic thrown in for good measure. I found the writing style lite and airy, and not heavy on sarcasam or pedantics. I will say though there were some stories that ended sort of abruptly, but I quickly learned that this was simply White writing style; short sweet and to the point, with out alot of extraneous detail but still full of lingering sentemantality that comes form a southern upbringing. Other highlights include her uncle that keps chopping off his fingers in a bandsaw, and ornithologists who use a young White's fevery body to incubate abandoned wild turkey eggs. I would defenatly reccomend "mama makes up her mind" to anyone wanting a light read or a vacation from some other more strenuous literature. It's pretty short so go do it.Read full review
Bought my first copy at a garage sale while on a road trip with my sister. We laughed so hard we had to pull over a couple of times.....lost it when someone did not return it because she had loaned it to someone else. Had to have another copy...have given it as gift....love it!
One of the funniest books I've read. I love southern humor & can't wait for her next book. This one will make you laugh out loud!
