When I first heard Madeleine Peyroux on the radio, I was certain that it was Billie Holiday - but it was too, dare I say, current. "Careless Love" was the first Peyroux CD that I bought, and it is wonderful,it is more raw (or is it polished?) than "Dreamland". I have to say that I particularly love "Walkin' after midnight" and, even though I don't know French, Edith Piaf's "La vie en rose" is softly provocative. "Was I?" is a delightful comic relief track with percussive bounce and free ranging Peyroux vocals adding both energy and puzzlement - consider these lyrics - "Was I drunk? Was he handsome? And did mama give me hell!" Bessie Smith wrote two tracks that conclude the album with the teasing "Reckless Blues" that features Cyrus Chestnut on piano and "Lovesick Blues" with the haunting lyrics "My sweetie went away, but he didn't say where, didn't say when and didn't say why." I like how every track on this album evokes a very different atmosphere.Read full review

Boring songs by a boring "artiste" with a mediocre voice. Don't waste your time unless you are studying French and want some practice, however some songs are in English as well. Uninspired all around. Giving it away.
