I purchased an E mac computer through our local community college in thier annual yard sale. This fully loaded machine came from the college computer lab. Since I have always used pc's this book was recommended to me by a friend. I found a great deal, like new on e bay. will be setting up a wireless router today to establish my link and seperate myself from the families pc. the book is a very simple , straightforward guide that will teach you probably more than you will ever need to know, from start up through graphics I would recommend this or the other versions depending which e mac computer you wind up with.
This is a very helpful book for people making the transition from Windows to Mac OS X. The first few chapters focus on using the Finder to navigate and manage the file system, and using the Dock and desktop effectively. Then there are descriptions of most of the small applications that come with OS X, chapters on networking, printing, and using the UNIX command line, and information on Internet connectivity and applications. Appendix D tells Windows users where to find familiar objects and functions in OS X, and Appendix F is a list of documented and undocumented keyboard shortcuts for the Finder, the desktop, and troubleshooting. Unfortunately there's no list of keyboard shortcuts for commands like "move cursor one word forward/backward" or "move cursor to top/bottom of document." I think that list is in the "Switching to the Mac" book of the Missing Manual series.Read full review
A fair guide to a complex subject, " Mac OX operating system" . The information is too light in vital areas. I would suggest looking for a guide that helps a reader try to easily maneuver through the somewhat wacky setup basics and system organization. Otherwise, many subjects are well described and easy to understand. I purchased the book because it was about the system I was installing on my machine.
well laid out, I can find info easily, it's even readable (amazing for any computer manual), lots of good tips, hidden functions, and improvements in operation (on mac osx). It also has good websites with useful utilities (although some no longer exist in jone of 2009) I'll also probably buy the osx 10.5 (leopard) version of this, it's very good.
