MTV's venerable "120 Minutes", which first aired in 1986 and ran for over 16 years (far longer than I was paying attention, apparently) specialized in presenting bands and music more cutting-edge than their usual video fare --- what might typically be categorized as "College Rock". This CD (and its companion, Volume 2) is a reasonably representative sample of what might have been seen and heard through the disc's 1991 release...and before: although a remix here, "I Melt With You" originally dates from several years before the series' debut. What's particularly gratifying is that, the aforementioned Modern English song and The Church's "Under The Milky Way" notwithstanding, there are a goodly number of tracks which are not commonly found on a dozen other New Wave/Alternative compilations, such as Sonic Youth's "Kool Thing" and Bob Mould's "See A Little Light". Each artist was granted thorough production credits and a blurb about their song in the liner notes. Altogether quite enjoyable.Read full review
Great songs of the era. Will bring alot of memories to the forefront of your mind, especially if you were into the club scene when these songs were popular. Nice blend of top 40 and not quite mainstream. One of the better compilations of the era.
Great CD for anyone in their 30's or 40's who remembers staying up late on Sunday night just to catch some alternative videos on MTV ( ... when MTV used to play videos). Of course we paid on Monday morning with lots of java for breakfast. Great trip down memory lane.
