It's about time Paramount/CBS video released the first season of Mission Impossible. I have been waiting years for this release and watched as other, less popular shows were released. This release is the best quality I have seen of these old episodes. The picture has been cleaned up and the dust and debris you usually get on syndicated TV is gone. The soundtrack is mixed here in 5.1 sound and sounds incredible. The set consists of 7 discs (4 episodes each) and they are in slim-line cases. The shows are in order of their original release dates. I do have some gripes about this set. I wish there had been some sort of bonus features, there are none. Some better liner notes would have been nice, including the release dates (they are not listed) better plot summary, guest star lists and maybe some trivia. Some interesting things about season one is that Jim Phelps, the more well-known leader of the Impossible Missions Force is absent. The role of Dan Briggs was played by Steven Hill (of NBC's Law and Order) and he was the leader of the IMF during it's first season. He left/was fired over a dispute, and replaced with Peter Graves for season two. Overall I would rate this set as excellent just because it is actually here and out after years of waiting...I will take a bare-bones set as opposed to nothing.Read full review
The First season was done in 1966. Cold War plots dominated most episodes, but were very entertaining none the less. An early episode even dealt with bringing a major narcotics manufacturer/distributor to justice. The shows were well written and well acted. My only negative comment is with the, so called, " 5.1 Surround Mono", The sound quality is good, but not 5.1. My home theater system plays the audio through the front speakers and my sub booms explosions, etc. It is before Mr. Phelps ( Peter Graves) Steven Hill does a fine job of portraying I. M. F. leader, Dan Briggs. I am very satisfied with my purchase of this boxed set and I recommend it to any "Mission: Impossible" TV fan. This is NOT anything like the Tom Cruise feature films.
Really enjoyed seeing them all over again..easy shows to watch..Clear beginning and ending--Get the bad person and off they go..plus great to watch how technology has changed--record players--phone booths--tape machines.. how did they ever manage without a cell phone?? When you see how many epidsodes you get--worth the money--esp. if you are traveling--hours of enjoyment.. Alway got season 2.......
This DVD set became a must have for me because I was unaware that M:I was NOT originally cast with Peter Graves in the role of Jim Phelps. Rather, the first season was headed up by Steven Hill (later of Law & Order fame)as Dan Briggs. The first season's episodes are a crisp mix of action, daring storylines, and characters of the "Impossible Missions Force" that you really cheer for. This is a must have DVD set for anyone into classic television. I have to admit that, up to this point, I had not seen a lot of the classic series, but I can say after watching that the Tom Cruise movies DON'T do it justice at all. For more of an action packed ride, pick up M:I season 1!
