Great film. Romantic comedy with American & British cast. A real class act. Amy Adams as the delicious Delysia LaFosse was terrific - a funny vamp who wanted to make the best use of her youthful beauty and talent in 1939 London; but alas, true love is calling to her via the extremely handsome, compelling Lee Pace (Pushing Daisies, The Hobbit's Thranduil). Along comes Frances McDormand as the wise and kind Miss Pettigrew who guides Delysia through one pivotal day. A champagne cocktail of a film that leaves you smiling. Highlight of the film is the performance by Amy Adams & Lee Pace of the song "If I Didn't Care."
Wonderful film, it gives a look into our history during the beginning of WW how folks were enjoying life. And how society treats women, and expectations of men in relationships, I found true to that period of time.

Originally I purchased this film because I am a fan of Ciaran Hinds and love the movies he has made. In this film Frances McDormand "Miss Pettigrew" is an out of work governess. She is out of her element as she stumbles into her new job, but she is just perfect in her new surroundings. She is able to fix the lives of everyone around her with out really trying. She is a true Romantic. I just love that about her and this movie. Romance is not dead and "Old Fashioned" wins the day! And the best part is she wins my favorite leading man Ciaran Hinds who is just perfect in the part he plays as the leading man. Rent it and then buy it. You will just love it.
Greatly entertaining, this is a wonderfully fast, funny but wise film about people meeting and having profound effects on each other and discovering what truly makes them happy. Great cast.

I'm a novelist, and no great fan of movies, actually. But this one was so wonderful I watched three times. The people in it are engaging, and Frances Macdormand is believable and loveable. Her transition from mousey nanny to a feigned take-charge "social secretary" is marvelous, especially when she picks up a cigar butt and lights it up. She's matched by everyone else in the film ... a brilliant ensemble cast. Screenplay, direction, acting, costuming, set decor, and 1930's British cars are all over-the-top great. I wish there were more movies like this out there. Unfortunately the majority of flicks today are comic book adaptions or macho fantasy nonsense.
