This is a modernized version of The Mikado that plays on the popularity of Eric Idle of Monty Python fame. The settings and costumes are not as authentically Japanese, as I imagine the original operetta to have been. (They actually used kimono (yes, that is the plural of the word). The characters are convincing: Yum-Yum, the fair, young maiden who is in love with herself when looking in the mirror; her suitor, Nanki-Poo, who is dapper in an almost too-effeminate way; the Mikado himself who is an unbelieveably inflated size and who overshadows the rest of the cast in the magnitude of his personality, royal stature, and sheer bulk. All of the main cast live up to the roles written for them by Gilbert of Gilbert & Sullivan. The only problem I encountered was in being unable to hear/understand some of the sentences or words due to the 1) speed in which they were delivered or lack of vocal elocution, 2) the fact that the words were spoken/sung in British English, or 3) my own hearing loss. Over all, having read the text of the presentation beforehand, the video added much and helped to reinforce certain sentences that I'd heard but could not place within a greater context, such as "I've got him on my list." I will watch this video again as it is entertaining and its satiric messages are as well-understood as they were in the British society to which they were first delivered in 1885. This wonderful video is one that I recommend!Read full review
This performance was different from all others I have seen, because it was set in a very posh and stuffy England of 1926. All the characters have been transformed into British royalty, and the dialog fits perfectly. The actor performing Ko Ko was good but not as good as some of the others. The only problem is that the dialog is too fast to follow unless you actually know what is being said. However, when I checked the optional info., it said that the disc could be loaded into a computer and that a file containing the libretto was there to be made printable by Adobe. I printed out 67 pages of fine print and then set about reading the dialog and stopping the show occasionally when I got behind. Really enjoyed it with that exception.
The singing, acting and dancing of this production of the Mikado was excellent. In most productions of this operetta they make sure that Katisha is extremely ugly. This makes it hard for me to appreciate the overall performance. In this performance Katisha is played by a very attractive opera singer.

This is a wonderful, modern-ish version of "The Mikado." Always my favorite Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, I own several versions. Since my husband and I are going to be in a community theatre production, I thought I would like him see see Eric Idle as Ko-Ko. Recommend to anyone who enjoys Gilbert and Sullivan and can think outside the traditional box. Or a good introduction for someone new to G&S (just grab a libretto first if you are not familiar with the book -- chorus lyrics are always difficult to understand). A fun DVD!
This is a delightful re-staging of the Japanese story redone into a 1920s English seaside resort setting. The whole show is patterned after Groucho Marx movies in the dances and costuming. Eric Idle is a treasure as Ko Ko!
