I did a little research before buying a safety razor. There are plenty of them out there that do the job just fine. As for me, I chose this razor because of the way the blade is secured, at an angle. This is moderate to aggressive safety razor that many suggest not being your first one. You need virtually no pressure at all, as you let the razor do the work. After a three pass shave, you will be left with one of the closest shaves available. However, it is quite easy to nick yourself without a patient technique. This is one of the finest razors I have ever used.

For the price you get an o.k safety razor that is going to do the job . the handle is made of chtoned brass and the head is made of a chipable chromed zink alloy (not so durable at all). But for the money it is o.k. not for a life time . Will recomend spending more $ and buying an " above the tie " razor that will have better results and will last you a life time since it is fully stainless steel construction with a better build quality . If you want spending little money for an o.k qualoty at best buy merkur. Zink alloys tend to chip from my owm experience. If you want the besy buy an "above the tie" - the slant is a masterpeace of a shave. smooth yet very efficient.

I prefer this slant bar version of this razor to the 38c barber pole, as it is more efficient, while actually being more mild than the standard closed comb. Don't believe what you read on some reviews about it being particularly aggressive, and needing to be extra careful with the razor; If you practice the same precautions you would with any DE safety razor, and you aren't any more likely to have nicks or irritation. The cutting angle of makes this slant bar makes it a little more efficient at cutting, about the same idea as shaving on the diagonal (promoted as the "Gillette slide" technique in their early advertisements). At the same time, the torsion and tight clamping applied to the blade rigidly hold the edges, preventing deflection (often described as "blade chatter") that can result in catching and digging into the skin: this is what makes this razor particularly mild.Read full review

Just had my first shave with this razor. It gave me a super smooth shave just using two passes. This is my second safety razor. I previously had the Edwin Jagger de89 which I really liked and was an excellent first safety razor for me. However, I wanted something with more aggressiveness and this merkur 39c is perfect. It's not too agressive to where I feel like I'm going to cut myself easily but aggressive enough to give a very smooth shave. I'm very happy with my choice. Also, the slant bar is not something to be concerned about. I hold the razor in the same position as when shaving with a straight bar.

Merkur is a high quality name that delivers high quality goods. This razor gets me BBS and will obviously outlive me. Fit and finish are flawless. I'm actually tempted to pick up another as a travel razor. If you are thinking about trying a slant bar you won't go wrong with this one!
