... are condemned to repeat it. - George Santayana In this case, remembering and repeating are both very enlightening and enjoyable! First, these are "only" CDs. No Super Audio. No extra-high bit-rates. I have a couple of these in SA-CD, and the difference is clear in several ways over both speakers and headphones, and not always in favor of the SA-CD. So as "only" CDs, these have excellent sound overall. I attribute this to two things: the extreme care the engineers took with the original recordings, and the benefit of having the producer of the original recordings manage these remixes from the original tapes. I have a friend who used to say, when I played a record, "It's only vinyl." He had a professional 15 inch reel to reel tape machine. Even his system could not show how much music the original engineers actually captured on their original equipment! Now for the important part: why does it matter whether the sound is good or not? It matters because the entire production team worked together in service to the music. As can be heard on the CDs, and read in the excellent enclosed booklet, the music came first, with the team working to get the technology out of the way of the music. Even if the recording quality were poor, the overall level of performances is excellent. These are performances worth remembering, and not a condemnation, but a joy to repeat. Overall, the sound gives a stable, identifiable perspective, with instruments in the same place throughout a track. The listener sits in a "magic balcony" just a bit over the head of the conducter, where the microphones were placed. With most of these having been on three original tracks, the two track final mixes are good enough to encourage a willful suspension of disbelief, so the listener can relax into the aural image and focus on the intent of the composer rather than the details of the technology or technique. Unlike sampler "best of..." collections that feature a track of Beethoven here, of Schubert there, these collections make a broad range of complete works available for what works out to around $2 per CD. Considering the breadth of music, quality of performances, and excellence of engineering, these provide a great opportunity to either start a good classical music collection, or simply increase what we remember and improve our sense of musical style and interpretation.Read full review

It was just what I wanted. I know the close-up sound isn't for everybody, and I don't like it either, but the performances are the thing here.
