I chose Marc Chagall as a reference, for inspiration and knowledge of his work and philosophy. What motivates him, what drives his art, what is he communicating, what is his aesthetic, what is his voice, his technique. Who is he as an artist and as a person and what is his process of creation. He, through this book, became my teacher and mentor. This book made it possible for me to explore his use of color, forms, shapes, and how he put all this into a format. He did large paintings, stained glass windows, scenery for plays and operas, including the ceiling of the Paris opera house. The vibrant colors give life, the forms and shapes give a ground, and their movement took me on a voyage through their time. Chagall's ability to paint is as if it was violinist in the heart of the village inspiring a love of music, community, and an enthusiasm for the rhythm of life. He showed me in this book what it is to be an artist, to express (I didn't say illustrate) the life around us and to make it compelling, captivating and alive. Each work tells a story of a community's life. I could see and comprehend it and I began looking at the life around me. The people I pass on the street, those sitting in a coffee house, a mother and father with their children and I see their story. This visual story held my interest and asked me questions about life, ours and others, and stimulated my desire for a blank page, a tool, something physical that will receive the mark, an image, to communicate, release, articulate, and express my feeling of wonder and beauty.Read full review
