This is my second one. The reason that I am buying a second one is because I like them. Small, good sound, two mic preamps, 8 line inputs, another 8 accesible using digital in (so for example you can use your ADAT's AD/DA converters as a front end for eight extra channels or something like the Behringer ADA8000 if you want to step up the sampling rate). The drivers have been fairly stable, and they are available in Win 7 64 bit flavor. Also has a breakout cable that includes MIDI in and out, Word Clock, and digital I/O. For about $160 used (give or take) a dude who owns an ADAT has a 16 track studio, with all 16 visible to Pro Tools MP. Sweet and cheap.
I think... Well, I believe the M-Audio FireWire 1814 Interface is going to serve it's purpose. However, the fact that you (purchasers) have to WAIT for M-Audio "the company" to release the updated drivers is very is a downside. So, if you have a new operating system on your computer, whether using Windows or MAC, you can do nothing with this audio interface at this time (10/7/2009 @ 1:53 A.M.). And, I don't know about anyone else, but I am a producer and that can be a major hold-up. I rated this product a 4 out of 5 with hopes of a good performance. When M-Audio releases the drivers for MAC 10.6.1 Snow Leopard, that is!
Works surprisingly great for a device that came out in 2004. I've had no problems using it with my laptop that has a dedicated 1394 port. Otherwise, you'd need something with a thunderbolt port + a firewire to thunderbolt converter. I had no problems installing drivers on Windows 10, but I've read comments of others having issues with other OS's. If you're an apple user, be prepared for the possibility of having to dual boot to get it to work. You have to shut down your computer before you plug in the interface anyways. You can also send a picture of the device or box to Ableton and get a free copy of Ableton Live Lite.

The M-Audio Firewire 1814 is a Excelent Mobile Audio Recording Interface. High Compatibility with Windows and Mac Os Operational Systems, the Drivers are reliable and easy to install. No longer available on the M-Audio Products List, are rare to find. Highly Recommended Audio Recording Interface and cheaper than the new models.
This is a very nice interface but it's probably not for the non-tech savy user. There were a lot of problems with XP and especially SP3. The manufacturers website was of some help. However, a lot was only resolved by trial and error. As far as using the product,... if your software comes with them,... "watch the tutorials!" They will save you a ton of time.
