I watched this several years ago, thought I had found it worth watching, so years later I bought this copy, and memory hadn't failed me. If you have the docudrama about Luther, "Return to Grace", you'll find these two discs make a fine team. Each gives a bit different perspective on Luther, but the core remains consistent between them, so they make a more complete picture of the man. I'm glad I have both, and I think you will do well to have each of them. Neither goes into Luther's tantrum about the Jews, so if you're looking for that rant, you'll find it in neither. Entertaining story presentation, giving more insight into the Protestant Reformation.

If you believe and agree that anyone, including the church, can be led astray from God's will, watch this movie. The acting is superb and though I'm not a historian or theology expert, the story seems intact with what I know or was taught.

Every Christian, regardless of his “branch,” needs to have an appreciation of the roots of Protestantism and its birth, the Reformation. This movie will serve well as an introduction to the devout practitioner as well as the casual inquirer. Although it is a dramatization, it is generally historically accurate it keeps the viewer involved in the intrigues of the religious – political dynamics of the day in a way that a documentary could not. The acting is appropriate and convincing with Joseph Finnes doing an excellent portrayal of Luther and memorable tableau role by Peter Ustinov who steals the show. There is surely some poetic license in the development of the characters, but none so far-fetched so that it compromises the integrity of the story. Some will see the movie as anti-Roman Catholic. Actually, it’s a frank and fair look at the Catholicism of the times and should add to the appreciation of how the Protestant Reformation contributed to the integrity of Catholic Church of today. After all, it was Luther’s intention to reform his church and he succeeded in many ways. I’d seen the movie when it was in the theaters and decided to add it to my library for my own enjoyment as well for use with my students in an “Inquirers Class.” – Pr. I'm glad I finally found this DVD in a Region 1 format that works in my player! This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Fiennes' portrayal of Luther is a beautiful picture of the struggles and triumphs of one of the greatest heroes the world has ever known. They do a great job reliving the second most important event in history, taking liberties only when necessary. I recommend you check this movie out!

I was so glad to find this video, so I bought 2 so I could share it with others. I've literally seen this movie over 100 times and never get tired of watching it. And, the fact that they were scratch free was awesome. Luther is about how the Romans had so distorted and perverted the Christian faith in the Catholic church. Kinda like what is going on with the new age religeon right now. Etc, etc, etc. Luther wasn't trying to start a new church, but was trying to straighten out all the lies in the catholic church (at that time) that were being taught. It in no way is condemning the Catholic church. But instead, is telling everyone, "Read the Bible for yourselves" and find out if what you're being taught is truth or a lie.
