I started hearing things about Florence and the Machine a couple months ago, as a couple of their songs began to get regular radio airtime. The songs really started to grow on me, so I decided to buy the album. It turns out the songs on the radio aren't even the best on the album. My favorites are Howl, Drumming Song, Between Two Lungs, Cosmic Love, Blinding and You've Got the Love. That's six songs, which is basically half the album. That is an incredibly good percentage, something I almost never see in an album. The other songs aren't too shabby, either. Their sound is inventive and powerfully rhythmic and I can't get enough of it. I like how they utilize such seldom-used instruments as the harp, which sounds tremendously beautiful on Cosmic Love. Do yourself a favor and get this album.
There are albums that come out every so often that feels unique. This one combines a strange sort of soulful female vocal bellowing with pleasant, simple instrumental harmonies ranging from the harp to acoustic guitar, all driven by a hard rock core. At times, this album is simple and folksy, which is not necessarily its greatest advantage. The best parts of it comes from the synthesis of strange diversities. All-in-all, Lungs is a great album for those who love quirky strangeness.
I just can't get enough. This is a great album for kicking off your New Year in the right state of mind. Florence literally leaves me feeling like I have more breath in my lungs (which naturally makes me breath more deeply).Buy a copy for yourself and one for someone you love (or just like),you will not be dissappointed.
