First of all: Yes i am form Germany, and many would ask: Did they have such Games? and so on....Short answer: YES! We did! And the Demo of that found on a local PC-Games Mag´s CD-ROM was the cause why I bought this (not exactly, but more on this soon! ;))! As mentioned I used to play the Demo-Version ´till I got bored because of the Quick End! Then the Years passed, I grew older, got new PC-Systems and Games like Half-Life, Return to Castle Wolfenstein and so on pulled my Eyes on them! Until that special day a few Weeks ago, when I stumbled over an interesting article related to a new Wolfenstein Game called Wolfenstein - The New Order! Then I started to play backwards all the Wolfenstein Games from the latest to the very first.....and ended on one thought: Was there not another Great Game that was the predecessor of Heretic 2? And yes....it was: Heretic......and just that little thougth of that Game brought back some good Childhood Memories and that is why I bought it! Well to be honest: It´s Graphic-Style is very, very outdated....but you should give it a try (specialy when you were a Fan of DOOM and so on! ;)), because it has more to give (hugh, what more than just Violence and Gore??)! Yes, it has great Music and SFX alongside a good Story and the Guy´s at ID-Soft made a great Level-Design, an interactive Environment (u know those "hidden" Doors from Wolf3D or DOOM??), the Enemies are sometimes there in large numbers and it is somewhat a forefather of Modern FPS-Games (well, i know many would say DOOM was, but it is not correct as Spear Of Destiny and Wolf 3D were there in the first!!!) I realy love that 2.5D experience though it is somewhat "fresh" compared to the nowadays ruling HD-3D Photo-realism Games! And as mentioned earlier: It brings back some memories (for many people it might be childhood ones I assume!) and I think it is a must have if you: -Own Heretic 2, Hexen or Hexen 2 -Like old 2.5D Games -Like Horror-Games -Liked the DOOM-Series or if you just want to make a step back in the good ´ol days! ;) There´s only one thing to mention: To Play you need to have some MS-Dos Emulator like Dosbox or D-Fend Reloaded as it is originaly from the year 1994 and was then later re-released on CD in 1996! ;) To the Game: You Start in a somewhat wooden Chamber surrounded by some flying Demons and pointing to an open area with some water and the Heretic symbol on the ground! As you have only a few weapons by the time beeing, your goal is to get the hell out of there and get yourself suited for the final battle with the Serpent Rider called D´Sparil who brought Death and Destruction to your Homeland and to the People of your Race and you want some Bloody Revenge therefore! The Requirements are as mentioned somewhat low: only an IBM PC with CD-Drive and a Model of 486 or higher and at least 4 Megs of Ram and SoundBlaster SoundCard are required (well modern PC´s can play that with ease....though they have to rely on an Emulator that simulates MS-Dos! ;))Read full review
I had the free version of this game back in the 90's and liked it then. This is the complete version with all 5 levels and I'm enjoying it a lot. It brings back memories and I think it's worth the money.

First I just wanted to say to anyone considering purchasing this game that because of it's extreme (in terms of computer advancement) age you will need to get a source port to run it on a modern PC. What's a source port? In this case it means a port of the DOOM Engine on which the game is built, along with several other games such as Doom/II and Heretic's spin-off "Hexen". As of this writing I would recommend "Skulltag" as the easiest Doom source port to set up and use, though there are many available and they are all free. It's not nearly as complex as it may sound and there are tons of FAQ lists, a Doom wiki, and many message boards if you need help. Now, about the actual game itself. Heretic is a classic FPS in the vein of the original "Doom"/"Doom II" in that it uses 2D sprites, and rendering to create the illusion of actual 3D. Most of the game entails running through maze-like settings, killing tons of baddies and looking for keys to open new doors. No escort missions or anything like that, just you, your weapons and a whole bunch of monsters standing in the way of your next objective. Any puzzles in the game are pretty basic, and again most only consist of finding key X for door Y to get to location Z. But the monsters increase in number and are increasingly tough as you progress through the game. For people who enjoy this type of challenge Heretic's fantasy trappings should be a welcome breath of fresh air from Doom and many other FPSs Science Fiction setting. The graphics are good for the time, but of course using 2D sprites for enemies means that the game shows it's age. So basically, if you like DOOM you'll probably like this. If you didn't like Doom this won't change your mind about this style of gameplay.Read full review
This is the game that got me hooked on gaming on the PC, way back in the day. Plays pretty much like a gothic version of Doom, really, and you know that's all good. The level design is up to id software's usual high standards, with plenty of tricks and traps and nooks and crannies, as well as the occasional wide open space to seriously throw down. The background music is superb, with a mid-'90s-era style. The enemies are varied and well deployed, and the aforementioned gothic-sensibility art style is nice throughout the game. Heretic really is the complete package. If you've any interest in Doom-era shooters, this is a game you must play. About the only drawback is that nowdays in 2010, you'll need some backwards-compatibility in your hardware to run it--but if you've got a system that can run Doom, it'll run Heretic as well. Enjoy!Read full review
I'd really love to have this games. But somehow I can't find a better way to pay for it (try my best but was un-successful). I've just brought some games from trademe, just deposit to some Bank of NZ acoount and postage to me (easy). I'm in New Zealand, I'm in a position that quite difficult to meet payment. I just need an acount from the buyer that I can deposit to. Thanks
