This drive, manufactured in the early 2000s, is from an unfortunate period where the cost to manufacture these drives didn't seem to have a floor. Upon installation, I popped a CD in the drive and was very happy to get data off of it, but then I needed to change discs and that's when everything went downhill. The tray opened, a new disc was added, and then every attempt to close the tray resulted in it closing for a couple seconds and then opening again. The issue seems to be that the mechanism on the bottom of the tray that should move some gears into place so that the tray motor will lift the laser assembly up to capture and start spinning the disc requires perfect alignment. The tray does not provide that alignment. Some light percussive maintenance will also cause the primary gear on the tray motor to pop out and then nothing works. Fortunately, it's fairly simplistic to disassemble to fix that, but getting another disc in is a chore. It require disassembling the drive every time the eject button is pressed in order to get the laser gantry to engage with some creative poking and prodding. The control board is also very brain dead and the drive will not even acknowledge the eject button unless the drive is connected to an active SCSI bus (just power to the drive is insufficient). I've since ordered a replacement for this drive that is by a different manufacturer and at a much higher cost, my hope is that drive will work when it arrives better than this one does.Read full review
