First off… if you have a small television, a stereo, and DVD player this remote is NOT FOR YOU! This is a very advanced remote control, and does WAY more than you need. In other words, don’t waste your money on something so extravagant, unless you have the use for it. This is a remote that best suits someone with a large amount of media equipment, and who is tech savvy enough to play around and get it to work exactly the way they want it to. Setting up the remote is fairly easy, but it does take a little practice and a little effort to get everything just the way you want it to be. Don’t expect to charge it up, enter a few codes, and be ready to go… it takes more effort than that. Expect to spend an hour or more setting the remote up the first time, and then more time throughout the course of using it as you figure out what else you want it to do. With all that said, the remote is great. Good weight, comfortable in your hand, and a whole bunch of great features and options. I was a little disappointed that the LCD screen wasn’t more clear, but it’s still very readable. All-in-all, a great purchase… a lot of fun… if you enjoy that type of thing.Read full review
Love: 1) The remote seems to be able to control all functions built into my A/V equipment (Even some great functions that didn't get included with their respective remotes). In a few cases (i.e. dimmer systems) some codes had to be learned, but this process was very easy. 2) The buttons react quickly and have a great tactile "click" feel...much better than all the mushy soft buttons on the factory remotes. Dislike: 1) No MACROS! Seriously!? Good Universal remotes have included macro functionality for over a decade! I think the developers got buried in the task of making this remote learn so many codes from so many devices that they forgot about how to best put all those codes to good use. footnote: It could be argued that macros were included in the form of the "Activities" feature. And this would be somewhat true. 2) The activities feature is a good idea, but is poorly implemented in this remote. Too many assumptions are made, and the programming aspect of the activities does not allow enough advanced control of the sequencing. After I added activities and set my device codes, all activities behaved erratically, and I had no method of tweaking them in Logitech's software. 3) The power button up top is a good idea, but pressing it results in an "all off" command which, although useful, would be better suited as a "device on/off" command. Still trying to figure out how to change that... All in all, the code-entering/learning process of the 880 is light-years ahead of my last Super remote (an MX series), and in that category, the 880 gets an A+. Sadly, this good score is forgotten after I pound my head into the desk trying to wonder why a traditional macro feature was not included. If they could improve this aspect, the 880 would be a near-perfect remote.Read full review
The remote itself is awesome. it will do ANYTHING you want. setting it up via the PC is a breeze and help is great. If you are looking at this remote then you most likely already know what it can do and why you want it. I would give this remote 5 stars easily if not for the next paragraph.... Heres the real problem. the battery and the battery compartment. To say the least the remotes desig is flawed here. the connectors from the remote to the battery are small. they coulda been made different to ensure NO problems with the connection to the battery. Then its either the battery or the battery compartment that is sized wrong. the battery fits in way to loose. it doesnt touch the connectors right without rigging a piece of paper in there. ridiculous. so without the battery making the right connection, the remote will turn off then you have to play around to get it back to where it should be in relation to your system components being on or off, etc. pain in the ass. logitech has support for this problem. they are well aware of it. they have fixed it since the remote came out a few years ago. i do not yet know what kind of support they will have for buying the remote used on ebay or wherever. but you should be aware that the remote you might on ebay can certainly have this flaw. mine does. IF you can avoid this problem then i can not say anything bad about this product and yes this is a big problem. i rigged mine so that it doesnt shut off all the time but at times it will. just be aware of this problem and maybe do some googling before you dive head first for this remote. 5 stars for the remote. 4 stars because of the battery problem.Read full review
I've had trouble with the volume buttons not working well and I also had difficulty with the USB connection. This was my second 880 (says that I am satisfied), and the battery exploded in the last one too. That's three significant problems in the course of 3 years. I think quality control is the biggest issue with all Logitech products and I usually avoid them. That being said, this remote has an ingenious design and really makes the control of a stereo, TV, and other electronics system. I couldn't find a competitor that did as good of a job. DO NOT BUY this if you are just trying to control a TV. This is suited for a system with multiple components. Programming is pretty easy but you must be able to use a computer with internet to do it. Button positions are fine although I'd prefer the more common buttons to be higher on the remote. This is not a big problem, but I sometimes feel like I'm holding it from the very bottom and not the most natural position. Overall this is a very good product. Buying this on EBay, I'd be sure to buy from someone reputable (and new in box if possible) as I think the quality is questionable and I'd want to be able to return it if something is wrong. Logitech did support the first problems, but even though they had to replace the remote due to the USB problem, they did not replace it because of the volume button failure because they said I had bought it more than a year prior (even though they had replaced it only a few months earlier). That's why I was on EBay to buy another replacement.Read full review
I'm on my 3rd replacemnt 880 since October, but still love it. For anyone having the dreaded reboot problem please read on. The remote will be working perfectly fine and suddenly reboot itself as evidenced by the "Testing" screen appearing before the Acivities screen reappears. The remote now thinks that all your devices that it turned on 10 minutes ago are now off because it has rebooted itself. Tech Support does not know how to resolve the problem except to replace the remote. After several replacements I have finally learned that the design of the battery compartment is the problem. The battery fits loosely enough in the compartment that it can move slightly away from it's contacts. When this occurs it is the same as quickly removing and replacing the battery, the remote shuts down and then restarts. Solution: Until Logitech redesigns the battery compartment, here is a simple fix. Take a piece of paper (card stock works well) cut the same size as the battery. Fold one end several times like an acordian and then place that between the lower compartment wall and the battery end. This should act like a shim and prevent the battery from moving away from the contacts. Also: 1) While I really appreciate that you can use a Mac to set this up, the interface is not at all intuitive if you want to do anything beyond the most basic functionality. Little things like making the "guide" button bring up a guide is a relatively arduous process, and changing backgrounds / channel icons / etc. is pretty well hidden. 2) While it looks a lot like a TiVo remote, it feels much cheaper. I expected it to feel much more substantial than it does. Luckily, I don't have kids. If I did, I'd take this back immediately, because it feels like it wouldn't take much to break the plastic (or worse, the LCD). This isn't the sort of remote that you'd want to toss off to the side of your couch after you've picked a channel. 3) The charging dock is terrible. We're talking $29 cordless phone terrible. Nothing seems to keep the remote in place, and there's no way to mount it to anything. Basically, you need to have a table or other perfectly flat surface within 6' of an outlet. I hate the thought of having to buy an end table just to make the charger work. Summary This did a good job of getting rid of all my remotes. It is not cheap regarding MRP, but I bought on ebay and it is ok about price. Being a blond girl My complaints about the remotes being too complicated are gone at least. With the remote, complexity becomes much easier to manage.Read full review
