I purchased numerous books for my students to use in Art class as reference materials. Lives of the Artists by Kathleen Krull was one of these books. I suppose the author was trying to grab readers attention by putting off-color comments about artists. I just don't think it was necessary. It wasn't as much of a guide as it was a commentary on the artist's life. I wasn't happy with this book and didn't even use it as a source in my classroom.
I used this book for the Art History class that I taught to 7th graders. GREAT pictures and interesting tidbits about the artists that made it very interesting...and FUN! You will love this book. Highly recommend. You will enjoy just reading about the artists and their lives.
"It's not what an artist does that counts, but what he is" - Picasso, p. 56 This is very good for Ages 12-16 to understand what was inside the artists's thought before creating their art works. They will learn what life is from this book and eventually realize that the artists are some sorts of people who had chosen their ways due to the visions of life they thought.
