I recently bought a disk containing Linux, the alternative operating system for those of us who wanted an alternate to Microsoft and/or Apple. It soon became clear that the system has significant advantages over Microsoft and Apple, in that it is open and inexpensive, if not free. It also became obvious that some kind of instruction was needed, as opposed to stumbling through the system a bit at a time. Hence the book. The book is well laid out and logical, as most of the "Dummies" series are, but it will take time to sink in. You have to learn to walk before you can run, and Linux is a mental example of the same thing. From what I can see, a person fluent in Linux has a system that will be usable for life, as opposed to something which will be "obsolete' in a few years and vulnerable to hackers and the like. The price is not unreasonable, either. My suggestion to anyone wanting to explore Linux is to do as I did, namely, buy the CD and have a look at it, and then, if interested, but this book or other similar ones and go from there.Read full review

There is a newer edition of this reference book, but this edition will still help someone new to Linux in getting an understanding of the OS and implementing it if that's their intent. The author writes with knowledge and uses good analogies to get concepts across. Will it answer every question you might have on this subject? No, but really their isn't any reference that can. This book is intended to get "newbies" started and pointed in the right direction, and to encourage them to go on to learn more and how to do that, too. This edition is still for sale on the regular retail market, and at a price that's more than four-times what it cost me on ebay! If you want the latest and last word in getting started in Linux then go right on to those retail outlets that are selling that latest edition. But, if you want to get started in Linux (or are just curious) at a much more reasonable price then look for this edition to jump in with. It will get your foot in the door, your PC running any one of a number of "distros" (versions of Linux, unlike Windows there are many interpretations of this OS; something for everyone, so to speak) and with the Linux online community, you'll be able to take that "dive." This is a learning experience, and Linux for Dummies gets your education started!Read full review

If you're new to Linux I suggest getting a newer edition geared to your particular distribution. I'm pretty basic. This wasn't much help. Plus, it's way out of date.
