What would it be like to be adrift at sea for 227 dats with nothing but emergency rations, a hyena, a badly injured zebra and Richard Parker, man-eating Bengal tiger as your shipmates? This is where we find a 16-year old Indian boy named Piscine Molitor Patel (Pi). Adrift at sea after surviving a catastrauphic dissaster that claims his entire family (mother, father, brother and their zoo). Piscine is a teenager growing up in Pondicherry, located in southern India. His family runs the Pondicicherry Zoo whiuch makes Pi's life rich with unique and wonderful experiences. Piscine learns the psychology and husbandry of animals. Pi amd his brother Ravi are taught to respect the animals, not as pets, but as living things with their own needs. Pi's father dramatically demonstrates the danger of the animals when the boys are forced to watch when a starving Bengal tiger kills and eats a "pet" goat introduced into its pen. Pi's knowledge is nurtured by good schools and excellent teachers, in particular his atheist science teacher who inspires Pi to study zoology. Pi survival through the use of his wits and sheer determination, is one that grabs you and never lets go. It's a story that seems both too real and surreal at the same time. Yann Martel is a master story teller and he weaves a tale that is entertaining and thought-provoking and at the end, he challenges you to believe it all. A real page-turner!Read full review

I love this book! It's one of my favorites so far! The story tells of a story about a young Indian boy who has to survive out on the ocean in a small boat with a tiger named Richard Parker. I love every chapter and I can't wait to finish reading the book!
I loved the book!! I needed it for school and I'm glad I read it. It had a wonderful plot that never gets boring! The beginning was a bit slow but Part 2 was where the story got very interesting. The book was long but well worth the read. It was the first British Literature book I'd read and it was very legible for me to read. I would recommend to novice readers.
