A contemporary policeman in pursuit of a vicious serial killer is struck down in a traffic accident. He awakens almost forty years in the past. He stumbles into a nearby police station where he is recognized as a new transfer from an another police division. Now he wonders if he is crazy, in a coma, is being tricked somehow, or if some other bizarre explanation is to be found. Meanwhile, he has a job to do: Stopping villains with his new found partners. This itself is nightmarish at times, putting up with what to him is antiquated police work and inadequate technical support. Forced by circumstances to work with this Neanderthal colleagues, he does bring something to the table, but so too do his colleagues. He and they are forced to a reluctant admiration of each other. Meanwhile, there are ambiguous clues in the form of phone calls, messages from the telly about what is going on; but more than anything the very means by which these messages arrive suggest that he is nuts or lieing somewhere in the future on a hospital bed. And with each episode there seems to be more and more of a tie-in between this past and the future. The plot alone is almost enough to earn five stars. What keeps it from getting there is a little too much hammy acting, writing in which the writers don't quite seem to take the story-line seriously and changes that occur in one episode are not maintained in the next episode (a problem with all too many series that have a stable of writers contributing episodes). Even so, the stories are good in general: each episode is complete in itself and provides a satisfying story, while the question of what is really happening is ever present, teasing the viewer with each new clue. I recommend it.Read full review

I watched this show on BBC America. Then I watched it on Netflix. My wife saw it and comments that it looks interesting. OMG! A Sci-Fi show my wife likes! I pinched myself and did not find myself waking to the sounds of heart monitor. I popped the popcorn and went back to Season 1, Episode 1. Then, the night we sat down to watch the Season 1 finale, it's not in our viewing list. I do a search. Nada. What? Netflix has dropped it! Well, if it ain't free- eBay! Found what I wanted and bought it. I love eBay. As to the show, the main character loses consciousness in present time and 'wakes' in the 1970's. This is when I was in high school and college. When I say they got the period right, I mean they got it painfully correct. I speak as an expert! If none of this sounds like your cup of tea, keep moving, nothing to see here. But, as one of the best pieces of Sci-Fi every produced by the BBC, it's worth the money and time. BTW, Netflix saw fit to cancel Ashes To Ashes, a spin-off at the same time. Yet another brilliant piece of Sci-Fi from the BBC. So far, no one has an American region DVD set. As much as I think my wife will like it, she isn't too happy about the cost of the DVD set and a region free DVD player.Read full review

This is one of my favorite UK series. It's not available from any of the streaming companies, although it was at one time on N#tflix. the concept is weird, but the writing and acting makes it believable - or at least makes me want to suspend my dis-belief. It also has the single best ending of any series on television - and I even include MASH, which was my first choice for yers. While I wish it were longer than 2 seasons, I understand the producer's decision to end it at that point. Too many tv series are kept going until they finally reach just plain annoying - no matter how great they were originally. This one was just weird enough that it could have become irritating had it dragged on too long. So, short, sweet and about perfect.

A classic British science fiction/adventure show. The characters are believable and the time trip back to the 1970's is fantastic. If you like British created shows, you shouldn't be disappointed with LIFE ON MARS.
